17-Day Beach Body Challenge – This was so popular in April that we decided to squeeze it into a 17-day Challenge so it will lead you right up to Memorial Day weekend!  Join us on May 4th to get started!   Do YOU have what it takes to get really serious for 17 days?  Some of our April participants have lost 10+pounds during their first 10 days!  Here is how you get started:  Come to our nutrition lecture on Friday, May 4th at 7:00 p.m. so you don’t just receive the diet outline, but you learn how to decrease body fat, increase lean muscle, improve energy levels and achieve optimal health.  After the 40-minute informative lecture, we offer a “tasting” so everyone can try some of the healthy recipes.  Then we do a private weigh-in, and we take your body measurements so we can track your progress.  We provide you with a helpful tracking calendar so you know exactly how to succeed, and we invite you back for weigh-ins to keep you accountable.  The last full day of the diet is on Wednesday, May 23rd with your final
weigh-in being Thursday, May 24th.  You will be ready for Memorial Day weekend on Friday, May 25th!!!!  For pricing or to register, call us at (908) 428-7978.  We offer a discount if you are already a client at !MPACT Training.

!MPACT Menu:  Trying to find a local restaurant where you can get a healthier bite to eat?  Hillarie Scannelli, owner/!MPACT, and Antonio Ruffa, owner/Caffe Piazza, have come up with the solution!  This !MPACT menu is really helpful when you are trying to make a healthier choice, and it is extremely helpful for busy families who are on-the-go and don’t have time to cook.  Tony at Caffe Piazza uses protein-enriched pasta & lean meatballs and offers a “baked chicken parm” instead of the traditional fried version.  The portions are calorie controlled and just right.  These menu items are perfectly balanced with proteins and carbs, and if you want something a little lower in carbs, their Cajun shrimp or chicken over mixed greens is perfect!  Stop in to visit Caffe Piazza today – 649 Route 206 in Hillsborough (in the same strip mall with Stop-N-Shop).  When you call your orders in, be sure to mention you want the !MPACT Menu:  (908) 359-9494

We bake every Saturday for you at !MPACT Training:  Yes, you heard that right . . .  it’s a little incentive to get up early. Come for our Total Development Bootcamps (6:00 or 7:30 a.m. on Saturday’s) and you leave with a healthy sweet treat and a nice cup of coffee.  This is an easy way for us to thank our clients who train with us on Saturday mornings. Sometimes we bake from scratch – other times we choose a healthier brand of muffin or cake mix (brands that do not contain high-fructose corn syrup) AND THEN, we add some Designer Whey Protein Powder along with MILA seeds.  Just so you know, the perfect treat after a workout has a balance of proteins, carbs and fats.  There are carbs in the muffin/cake mix – and the Designer Whey is a great protein source.  Also, the MILA seeds are an excellent “super-food” that contains 3,000 mg of Omega 3s!  We love teaching our clients how to achieve “balance” and this is just one way!  Join us for TD Bootcamp this Saturday.

Congrats Michael!:  Co-Owner, Michael Scannelli, who manages !MPACT Training with Hillarie, just received his Group Training & Bootcamp Certification so he could be even more hands-on here at !MPACT.  Way to go Michael!  Some clients are calling him “Military Mike” and the kids we train are excited Coach Mike will also be on deck as their trainer.

Best Spot to Train – Hillsborough Patch Blog:  Wasn’t so sure this was a good thing . . .but  it got people talking about us!  Let’s start by saying we didn’t really ask to be part of this blog, but once we saw we were included, we were kind of excited.  The blog was entitled “What’s the hottest spot to train in Hillsborough?”  At first we were delighted that so many people were voting for !MPACT and were writing nice comments.  Not only were so many of our clients voting for us, but we also received votes from the sports teams we’ve trained with their families – and even our Facebook friends were showing their support.  Unfortunately, some of the bloggers from other local gyms were seeing this as a way for us to “stack our votes” in order to win.  Of course, we were disappointed with those negative comments, but we didn’t bother responding to the blog since we don’t believe in lowering ourselves.  And we also didn’t think it was necessary to try to explain ourselves to anyone.

So it turns out !MPACT won for the most votes, but Powerhouse Gym had the most positive comments so based on some type of a “point system” they turned out to be the winner (with us in 2nd place) which was fine.  This was just a silly blog – a silly contest.  What we found out was that there is no such thing as bad press.  The hits on our website after the blog were unbelievable, and we had at least 5 new clients who said they came to us after reading the blog in the Hillsborough Patch!  It’s all good!  Thank you to Laura at the Hillsborough Patch for including !MPACT Training in that blog! And to be really honest, there are lots of great places to train in Hillsborough.  We all offer something different – and everyone has different needs.  So it’s great everyone can choose something that works for them.  Try !MPACT Training, and let us inspire you and help you discover your own greatness!

Do you want your kids to be ready for fall sports That’s why we are offering SPORTS PERFORMANCE CAMP in July!  We are offering two weeks of this camp from 1:00 – 4:00 p.m. (week of July 23rd and week of July 30th) – for boys and girls ages 10-17.  This is perfect if your child or teen who needs to be ready for their football, lacrosse, cheerleading or soccer season – since most of these sports start their practices in August.  We work on speed, agility, quickness, strength and conditioning.  We start with a light Cardio warm-up and Dynamic Stretches to condition the muscles and joints to prep them for movement.  We then move into strength training (using age appropriate weights) to develop a strong CORE and upper & lower body.  Next on our agenda is a strength & conditioning circuit (using cutting-edge equipment).  We have a brief snack time – and we incorporate Sports Nutrition discussions at this time.  Then we work on speed & agility drills –and even include an endurance run (on certain days – outside – in our development.  We provide motivational coaching throughout the day to help bring out the best in every athlete!  We finish off with a cool down & stretch with the inclusion of some yoga-like moves to enhance flexibility and reduce risk of injury (even pro athletes do this!).  The cost for this ½ day camp is $175 per child ($10 discount for siblings).  Please call for registration forms (space is limited):  908-428-7978.

We picked two winners this month – and we will pick two more towards the middle of May)!  Ellen Mauer:  Won $25 Gift Certificate to use towards Unlimited Group Training or towards a 10-Pack of Personal Training sessions.  Colleen Adams:  Won $25 Gift Certificate to use towards Unlimited or towards a 10-Pack of Personal Training sessions.  Congratulations Ellen and Colleen!

Trying to make an !MPACT where families need it most:  We want to find lots of ways to give back to our community and other non-profit organizations so for starters, we gave away several gift certificates for FREE training to our local schools to help them raise money during their basket-auction season this spring. We also offered a FREE Family Fitness Night to families from Woodfern Elementary where our children go to school.  At this event, families were able to have a fun workout and also learned about healthy eating.  On May 18th, we are offering FREE training to Hillsborough kids – ages 7-17 (read our newsletter to learn more about this event).  And we plan to offer some FREE form of training & Sports Nutrition to our Jr. Raider Football Players (grades 3rd – 8th) this summer like we did last year — but this year we will have it @ !MPACT – yahoo!

Well, in continuing to look for ways to give back and help others, we decided to choose a charity that means something to us.  We have a special place in our hearts for EMBRACE KIDS and have decided to give this worthy organization half of the proceeds from our t-shirt sales.  We (Hillarie & Michael Scannelli/Owners of !MPACT Training) live in the Rohill development in Hillsborough, and one of our neighbors was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia when she was 12 years old.  Sara Sbeiti is a very special girl, as is her family, and we couldn’t be happier that Sara is in now in high school and is also in remission.  EMBRACE KIDS helped the Sbeiti family through her treatments that lasted four long years.  You can only imagine what Sara and her family went through during this time, and it is wonderful to know that EMBRACE KIDS was there every step of the way.  They help with everything from family counseling to ironing out finances, medical coverage issues, fundraising and more.

When we decided to sell some t-shirts at !MPACT after our Grand Opening, we knew we wanted to donate a portion of the proceeds to a charity or non-profit organization.  We feel that it is important to give back – even if you are struggling when your business is still in “start-up” mode.  We’re delighted to give EMBRACE KIDS half of everything we earn so this wonderful organization can continue to help families in need.  The t-shirt orders will be arriving the first week of May, and we should have about $200 to donate to EMBRACE KIDS . . . We’ll keep trying to make an impact!

When is Family Fitness Night this Month?:  Come out for a great night for Fitness and Fun — May 11th from 7:00 p.m.  sharp till 8:30 p.mRegistration is required so we have enough room for everyone!  Family Fitness Night is awesome!  We warm up as a group and then kids train with one trainer, parents train with another – then we play some family dodge-ball together.  We finish off our evening with a scoop of vanilla ice cream to show that hard work is worth a sweet treat!  This night of fitness and fun is priced cheaper than going to your local chain restaurant on a Friday night for dinner.  Have a nice light meal and head over to !MPACT for fitness (and dessert).  Call us to register your family for May 11th:  (908) 428-7978.

Shake and Bake — By:  Dan Del
Guercio, Certified Personal Trainer, ASCM, NCSF

SHAKE AND BAKE! This phrase does not just pertain to processed seasoning packets and Ricky Bobby’s on-track antics.  It is also related to fitness.  If you shake up your workout plan you can burn more fat and build more muscle.  If you are a person that stays current, you have probably heard the term “muscle confusion”.  This is a concept that subscribes to the idea that you can avoid or surpass fitness plateaus by constant modification to your workouts.

The general consensus is that in order to diversify your workout plan, you need to completely revamp your regimen.  Contrarily, subtle changes also prove to be very effective for people – including myself – that prefer to stay loyal to their favorite exercises.  One approach you can use is making a small adjustment to the exercise itself.  The bench press is a perfect example because it is one of the most popular exercises worldwide, and there are many variations to it.  If you are used to a barbell bench press try switching to a dumbbell press.  The different mechanics – same form and joint actions as barbell press except there are dumbbells in its place – will force you to engage each pectoral individually. This can help build equal strength of your chest, and can help unmask any instabilities or weaknesses you might have.

The same concept can be used for other exercises such as the squat. Squats are one of the most effective techniques for building size and strength in your legs. However, there are variations to the squat that can prove to be just as effective and give your legs (primarily quadriceps and gluteal muscles) a new challenge to overcome. One variation of the squat is the sumo squat. To execute the sumo squat simply spread your feet wider than shoulder-width apart and point your feet away from your body. With the sumo squat you are getting the same joint actions (knee/hip extension), but you are targeting your hip adductors (inner thighs) as well. With squats – along with other leg exercises – adjusting the angles of your feet can help activate muscles that were previously inactive.

The bent-over row – an additional age-old classic – is another exercise that lacks neither popularity nor diversity. An excellent way to modify the bent-over row is to switch to a one-arm dumbbell row. To perform a dumbbell row place one hand and knee – start with left knee/left hand then switch the right side – on a bench, keep the other foot on the floor, and row a dumbbell up using your right hand. Similarly to the dumbbell chest press, the one-arm row forces you to isolate the muscles (predominantly the latissimus dorsi and rhomboids) individually.

Ultimately, in order to build muscle you need to break it down first. If you change the way you approach the exercises you know and love you will recruit different muscle fibers.  Alongside of recruiting more muscle fibers you will be challenging your body in a new way. These new challenges will force your body to work harder and you will burn more calories as you build muscle.
