Dear Hillarie:  I recently started really cutting back on portion sizes and started exercising a few times per week.  I’ve only lost two pounds in about four weeks, and I’m stumped.  My friend trains at !MPACT and told me that you’ve taught them to control portion sizes and eat meals that are balanced with proteins and carbs.  The other day I didn’t have time for lunch and grabbed a Café Latte at Starbucks along with a raspberry scone.  That was all I had until dinnertime.  Was that so horrible?  There had to be protein in the steamed milk in my Café Latte, and there were carbs in the scone – and probably some fiber and nutrition coming from the raspberries in the cone, right?  My friend said I should ask you since I’m not really listening to her (haha!).  Apparently, I’m destined for failure, and too embarrassed to sign my name, but please help if you can.

Dear Destined For Failure:  You are a lot like so many people who have busy lives, and maybe you don’t know a lot about nutrition . . . that’s o.k.  Happy to help.  When you skip meals, your metabolism slows down, so not eating all day won’t help you lose weight in the long run.  Yes, we want to move more and eat less, but I also want you to start thinking about “quality calories”.  Your friend was right . . . if you control your calories and have a nice balance of proteins and carbs with your meals and snacks, you create steady insulin (blood-sugar levels).  And your body will respond to that – especially if you are exercising regularly.  I went to the Starbuck’s website to see the calorie count on that scone and your cup of café latte, and I was not surprised to see that it wasn’t a healthy choice.  The calories alone on the scone are 480!  And it has a whopping 25 grams of fat (with 15 grams from saturated fat), 59 grams of carbs, 18 grams of sugar, and only 8 grams of protein.   OK, moving on to your Café Latte, I realize it just seems like a cup of coffee, but with all the cream and sugars used to make it so yummy, it has 190 calories with 7 grams of fat, 18 grams of carbs and 17 grams of sugar.  You are right, the dairy/cream gave this delightful drink 12 grams of protein which is great, but there are just too many calories, carbs and fats in this coffee & scone snack to make it anything BUT healthy.  I wish I had better news to report, but these two items add up to 670 calories.

Next time you are at Starbucks, check out their “food” items for lunch.  You could try the Chicken & Hummus with only 270 calories, 8 grams of fat, 29 grams of carbs and 16 grams of PROTEIN!   Our lives can be so hectic, but please try to make time to take care of your body . . . you only get one so we have to treat it “world class”.  Thanks for writing and hope this helped.  Regards, Hillarie

SPORTS PERFORMANCE CAMP (summer camp):  Do you want your kids or teens to be ready for fall sports?  That’s why we are offering SPORTS PERFORMANCE CAMP in July!  We are offering two weeks of this camp from 1:00 – 4:00 p.m. (week of July 23rd and week of July 30th) – for boys and girls ages 10-18 (broken up into age-appropriate groups).  This is perfect if your child or teen who needs to be ready for their football, lacrosse, cheerleading or soccer season – since most of these sports start their practices in August.

We work on speed, agility, quickness, strength, conditioning, and most of all CORE training.  We start with a light Cardio warm-up and Dynamic Stretches to condition the muscles and joints to prep them for movement.  We then move into strength training (using age appropriate weights) to develop a strong CORE and upper & lower body.  Next on our agenda is a strength & conditioning circuit using cutting-edge equipment including:  TRX Suspension Training, TRX Rip Trainers, kettle bells, weighted ropes, plyo-blocks, medicine balls and more!  They will enhance their performance and self-confidence in just one week!  Give your child or teen that competitive edge so they are ready for their sport of choice this fall.

We have a brief break for a healthy snack – and we incorporate Sports Nutrition discussions at this time.  Then we work on speed & agility drills –and even include an endurance run (on certain days – outside – in our development).  We provide motivational coaching throughout the day to help bring out the best in every athlete!  We finish off with a cool down & stretch with the inclusion of some yoga-like moves to enhance flexibility and reduce risk of injury (even pro athletes do this!).  The cost for this ½ day camp is $175 per child ($10 discount for siblings).  Please call for registration forms (space is limited):  908-428-7978.

FUNctional Training

By:  Dan Del Guercio, Certified Personal Trainer, ASCM, NCSF

Functional training is often viewed as a rehabilitation-type exercise that helps us gain stabilization skills, and also perform everyday actions — i.e. squatting, lifting, bending, etc. – without leaving the body susceptible to injury.  This is a large part of it, but the main goal of functional training is to strengthen your core muscles (transverse abdominus, oblique muscles, lower back muscles, the stabilization muscles in your legs, among others).

A lot of the equipment most often associated with functional training is resistance bands/tubing, TRX, bosu balls, swiss balls, etc. This kind of equipment is not always very appealing to an avid weight trainer. Some people do not really like a lot of this functional gear, but like to stick to free weights and machines. The only problem with this is that when using weights and machines the core can be ignored leaving the body (especially the lower back) exposed to injury. Luckily, there are ways to combine to core strengthening benefits of functional training and the resistance aspects of weight training.

One of the most popular resistance training exercises for the chest is the incline dumbbell press (targeting the pectorals and deltoids). All that has to be done to make it more functional is switch to a unilateral (one-arm) incline dumbbell press. What occurs is all the weight is loaded on one side of the body. This unilateral exercise activates the core, forcing the oblique muscles and transverse abdominus to keep the lower back flat against the bench, but also works the upper chest muscles at the same time. Keep in mind that this exercise is more difficult than its bilateral (double-arm) counterpart. Start with lower weight, keep the lower back flat against the bench, and then increase the resistance.

Another popular exercise for the upper body is the lat pulldown.  Again, all that has to be done to make this a more challenging core exercise is switch it to a unilateral version. However, this exercise differs from the aforementioned chest press exercise because it is performed with a long bar on a pulley system. This aspect makes the form slightly different. Exchange the bar for a single handle, make sure to sit up nice and tall, and pull the handle right down in front making sure the lower back stays straight. The target area for this exercise is the oblique muscles. If pressure is felt in the lower back decrease the weight and try it again. Just like the incline dumbbell press start light and work your way up.

There are also many ways to do traditional free weight exercises for the legs and strengthen the core at the same time. For example, doing an overhead barbell squat is an extremely effective functional maneuver. Anytime the point of resistance – in this case the bar – is raised overhead the exercise becomes harder because it is farther away from the center of gravity. The key in this exercise is to keep the abs and glutes tight from the start to support the lower back. If the lower back arches/rounds, the heels come off the ground, or the knee surpasses the toe at any time decrease the weight. If necessary start with no resistance and hold only the arms overhead.

These moves are extremely effective for building up core strength as well as targeting specific muscles groups (chest, back, legs,etc.). They also provide the potential to use equipment that is familiar and comfortable. However, I will stress this point over and over. Start light with these exercises because they are far more challenging than their traditional counterparts.

!MPACT Menu:  Trying to find a local restaurant where you can get a healthier bite to eat?  Hillarie Scannelli, owner/!MPACT, and Antonio Ruffa, owner/Caffe Piazza, have come up with the solution!  This !MPACT menu is really helpful when you are trying to make a healthier choice, and it is extremely helpful for busy families who are on-the-go and don’t have time to cook.  Tony at Caffe Piazza uses protein-enriched pasta & lean meatballs and offers a “baked chicken parm” instead of the traditional fried version.  The portions are calorie controlled and just right.  These menu items are perfectly balanced with proteins and carbs, and if you want something a little lower in carbs, their Cajun shrimp or chicken over mixed greens is perfect!  Stop in to visit Caffe Piazza today – 649 Route 206 in Hillsborough (in the same strip mall with Stop-N-Shop).  When you call your orders in, be sure to mention you want the !MPACT Menu:  (908) 359-9494
