5 NUTRITION TIPS TO SHED BODY-FAT FOR GOOD!:

 

1)   Change Your Lifestyle:  Setting yourself up on a “diet” to reach a specific goal can sometimes mean there is an “endpoint” to your plan.  That only contributes to yo-yo dieting, and we don’t want that.  In reality it is lifestyle changes that you adhere to that are going to help reduce body-fat and KEEP the pounds off.  So please follow the rest of these tips and MAKE IT your LIFESTYLE!

2)   Drink MORE Water!  Did you realize that your body uses water to transport and burn fat?  And if you drink an 8 oz. glass immediately before having your meal, you will feel full much faster – so you will consume fewer calories.  Water also helps keep your body properly hydrated during your workouts, which is essential . . . Can’t say enough about drinking water.  Shoot for ½ your body-weight in ounces of water EVERY DAY!

3)   Consumer Fewer Calories Than You Burn: You can estimate that if you weigh 135 pound, your body uses about 1350 calories during the day – just to move around and function (not counting exercise).  So now take your weight and multiply it by 10 so you have a basic estimation of your resting metabolic rate (RMR).  Then if I added the calories I typically burn during one of my bootcamps (about 475 calories), to the calories burned at rest: 1325, my grand total of calories burned for the day would be 180.  This means that my daily diet . . . the calories I consume, should be LESS than 1800 calories.  When your body is in a deficit, you lose weight.  Therefore, when I am trying to lose a few pounds, I usually consume about 1400 calories per day, and I get to my goal weight pretty quickly.  Then I make sure I follow all these nutrition tips so that LIFESTYLE changes help me KEEP the weight off.  Remember, even if you are eating healthy, you still have to know what your daily calorie range should be and stick to it.  When you reach your goal weight, you can certainly increase your calories by a 200 or 300 calories so that you maintain your weight instead of continuing to lose.

4)   Reduce Starchy Carbs:  Although we definitely need starchy carbs for energy, consuming smaller portions is definitely necessary in order to lose or maintain your weight.  This would be foods like pasta, bread, rice, potatoes, cereals, grains, etc.  Did you realize that a serving of rice is a ½ cup . . . Personally, I love rice, so I know I could “house” a pile of it (haha!) . . . So I measure out my portions so I give my body just what it needs.  And I always focus more on the lean proteins and the fibrous carbs (vegetables and salads) that I am having with my starchy carbs.  Fill up on the fiber and protein!

5)   Limit Sugar Consumption:  This is critical to your success.  Think about all the miscellaneous sugars you might be having every day . . . whether it is to sweeten your coffee (and don’t forget those sweetened/flavored creamers too!), or you are eating yogurts or smoothies with excess sugars — or even alcoholic beverages (YIKES), you need to start looking at how much you are taking in each day.  When looking at labels, choose beverages or snacks that have 10 grams of sugar or less.  Stick with natural sugars – like fruit and limit it to one or two pieces of fruit per day.  Vegetables are MUCH lower in sugar so focus on those!  Cucumbers, snap peas and red pepper slices in a little sandwich ziplock baggie makes an excellent mid-morning snack.  It provides your body with fiber, antioxidants and phytonutrients!

MONTHLY GROUP TRAINING CALENDAR

& SLIGHT CHANGES DURING AUGUST: 

Changes to August Training Calendar:  These changes are all noted on the Group Training Calendar . . . During August, the 9:30 a.m. Group Training Sessions on Monday’s and Wednesday’s will stay at the newly appointed 8:00 a.m. time frame.  So Monday through Thursday, you have the option of coming to an 8:00 a.m. Group Training Session.  The Friday Group Training Session will remain at 9:30 a.m.   And then in September, the 8:00 a.m. sessions will go back to 9:30 a.m. so that busy parents can get their kids ready for school.

SENIORS TRAINING (AGES 60+) COMING IN OCTOBER!  We are VERY excited to announce we are starting a special training session for men and women who are age 60 or older!  This new training program will be every Tuesday at 10:00 a.m., starting on October 4th, and we will def think about adding more sessions — this is a great start!  So think about it . . . when we were young, we needed to exercise to help our bodies develop and grow . . . and once we were grown, it was essential that we continue to exercise to maintain our health and our strength.  And then when we hit our 50’s, we are usually trying to decrease bodyfat for optimal health, as we adjust to a slowing metabolism.  By age 60, the goal is usually to remain healthy, fit and FUNCTIONAL.  It is so important to incorporate joint integrity work –so that our connective tissue is also strengthened.  This not only helps to reduce inflammation and pain, but it also allows us to have a healthier range of motion when performing day-to-day activities.  In this 55-minute training session, participants will be guided through a safe and effective workout that starts with a gentle warm-up, followed by resistance band work, balance and core training, and weight training to help improve strength as well as bone density issues.  The session finishes off with wonderful stretches to elongate the muscles.  This group training session is for beginners, as well as those that are already fit.  Participants will use weighted equipment such as dumbbells, machines, bands and medicine balls — and they will also use slide boards, balance pads and lots of other fun equipment.  Complimentary nutritional handouts will be provided since we definitely want to make sure all participants are coupling their exercise routine with healthy eating. VIRTUAL COACHING:  This is the latest way people are setting and reaching their fitness goals – especially if they don’t live close to !MPACT Training.  The first 1-hour session via phone with Hillarie is a great way for the client to outline his/her fitness goals and set up their plan of attack . . . whether it be weight-loss; improved energy levels; building muscle while decreasing bodyfat to get leaner and stronger; or receiving workout programs (via email) to do on your own so you get the results you are looking for.  Maybe you just need that motivation, knowing you are being held accountable to an expert in this field – as that helps so many of us stay on track.  Your program can also be a combination of nutritional & dietary guidance along with exercise counseling on what might be best for you to be doing on your own — and you will actually small have homework assignments depending on your goals.  As part of the initial session, Hillarie will email you some nutritional info and general fitness handouts that you will go over on your initial call so you have a good idea of what is expected of you in the weeks ahead.  If you are interested in weight-loss, you will be emailed a blank food log & exercise log which you will complete and email back to Hillarie on a weekly basis (prior to your scheduled call).  After the initial 1-hour session, the next 5 weeks will be 30-minute sessions (via phone) to go over your food log — to talk about any obstacles or barriers you may have incurred — to talk about your exercise log and receive helpful corrections as needed — and to get inspired for the week ahead.  It’s really hard to do it alone, especially when your life is busy with so many other things.  So working with Hillarie for 6 weeks is a great way to change your mindset, and become more focused on your fitness, your health, and your overall wellness, and to gain the knowledge about proper nutrition and exercise based on your goals.   *If you wish to continue these coaching sessions, they can be purchased in 5 week packs.  For pricing, please email:  [email protected]

 HEALTHY RECIPE

GREAT ENERGY SNACK FOR ATHLETES STARTING IN AUGUST:

CLICK HERE TO PRINT:  Home-Made Oatmeal Raisin Bars (protein-enriched)

Ingredients:

▪2 cups old-fashioned oats

▪½ cup all-purpose flour (or whole wheat flour)

▪½ cup packed brown sugar

▪¼ cup canola oil

▪¼ cup natural applesauce (no sugar added)

▪2 eggs

▪¼ tsp. salt

▪½ tsp. cinnamon

▪1 cup raisins (or dried cranberries) +
▪1 scoop of Designer Whey Protein Powder (French Vanilla)

Directions:

▪Preheat oven to 350 degrees

▪Mix all incredients together in separate bowl– then Spray 8×8 baking pan with non-stick cooking spray

▪Spread batter in prepared baking pan and bake for approx. 25-30 minutes until bars are cooked all the way through.

▪Let bars cool completely in pan before cutting.

SPORTS PHYSICAL THERAPY:  This is a great place to go for any type of physical rehab – and boy, are did a great job on my lower-back pain!  They handle everything from ligament sprains to arthritic pain.  I have always had a strong core and lower back, but I guess my age (47), my strenuous training routine/6 days per week, and the long hours I spend on my feet every day as a trainer can often take a toll on my lower back.  Every now and again, it just tightens up and I am in a lot of pain.  I heavily rely on the physical therapists at Sports Physical Therapy to get me mobile and pain free again!  They have multiple locations, and one of the partners, Jeff Erickson, is a neighbor of mine – great guy!  Can’t say enough about what an awesome facility this is!  Hillsborough location:  908-359-8800, Princeton (609) 419-0455, Somerset (732) 565-5455, Flemington (908) 806-2000.

TENDER LOVIN GRILL (TLG):  If any of you haven’t made your way into the restaurant that is located at the corner of Rt. 206 and Amwell Road, you are really missing out.  Not only is the food delicious, but nothing is processed or frozen . . . everything on their menu is freshly made.  So I met with the owners of TLG, Steve and Maribeth to talk about implementing an !MPACT Menu – which would be delicious foods that are also calorie-conscious.  So if you live or work locally in Hillsborough, you can stop in to check out their specials . . . their regular menu and their !MPACT Menu so you know you are staying on track with your weight-loss plan.  We will keep copies of the !MPACT Menu at our front desk so our clients can pick up lunch or dinner on days when they just don’t have time to cook a healthy meal.  And Steve & Maribeth will also have copies at their counter.  They have awesome food . . . you have to stop in to see them!  Lots of their regular menu items as well as their “Specials for the Week” are also super healthy and delicious.
