MARK YOUR CALENDARS – Sunday, June 4th, 2017 @ 8:00 a.m.:  FIT-BODY BOOTCAMP FOR BILLY.  This is a fundraiser for one of the beneficiaries of our favorite charity, Steps Together.  Billy is only 4 years old and has an inoperable brain tumor.  He has been undergoing treatments since the tumor was discovered when he was 15 months old.  So please come out for this special event which is helping this amazing family.  Participants will pay a donation of $20 or more (cash or checks made payable to Kristy Biviano – Billy’s mom).  This event is for adults and teens ages 13+ and participants will get a great workout!  Part of this event will be held outside in our back parking lot with fun running and agility drills, and inside you will use some great strength training and functional training equipment.  Don’t worry, there are lots of variations to each exercise based on your fitness level . . . and if it rains, we will still host this event – and the entire thing would then be held in our 4800 sq. ft. facility.  Please register for this event so we have enough stations set up, based on the number of people participating.  Just send an email with your name and age to:  [email protected]

FRIDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL IS BACK Attention Athletes:  You can’t wait until August training camp to start working on your 40-yard dash to improve your time, and you should also start gaining focus in the weight room to work on proper form.  So every Friday night during the month of June, we are offering a 90-minute training session for athletes (those entering 8th grade in September – as well as freshman through seniors).  It will help athletes to improve speed, agility, balance, strength, plyometrics, explosiveness, core control, and step quickness.  This will give your athlete confidence as they head onto the field this fall.  We also provide them with helpful sports nutrition info.  And although designed for football players, I can’t think of any athlete that wouldn’t benefit from this program.  For pricing or to register for this program, contact Michael at 908-403-7605.

RECIPE:  THE BEST SHREDDED KALE SALAD!

Vegan, gluten-free, grain-free, soy-free by TRUE FOODS
Ingredients – For the salad and dressing:
2 medium bunches de-stemmed kale, finely chopped (8 to 9 cups/300 to 340 g chopped)
2 large garlic cloves
1/4 cup (60 mL) fresh lemon juice
3 to 4 tablespoons (45 to 60 mL) extra-virgin olive oil, to taste
1/4 teaspoon fine sea salt
1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper (just eyeball it)
1/4 to 1/2 cup (35 to 70 g) dried sweetened cranberries, for garnish
For the pecan Parmesan:
1 cup (120 g) pecan halves, toasted
1 1/2 tablespoons nutritional yeast
1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil
2 pinches fine sea salt

Directions:
Preheat the oven to 300°F. Spread the pecans onto a baking sheet and toast in the oven for 8 to 10 minutes until fragrant and lightly golden.
Remove the stems from the kale and discard. (You can save them for smoothies if you are hardcore!) Finely chop the kale leaves (the smaller, the better).
Wash the kale and spin dry. Place dried kale into a large bowl.
For the dressing: In a mini food processor, process the garlic until minced. Now add the lemon, oil, salt, and pepper and process until combined. Adjust to taste, if desired. Pour the dressing onto the kale and mix it into the kale with your hands or toss with spoons. Keep mixing for about 1 minute to ensure everything is coated perfectly.
For the Pecan Parmesan: Rinse out the mini processor and pat dry. Add the pecans into the processor and process until the pecans are the size of peas or a bit larger. Now add in the nutritional yeast, oil, and salt and process again until it has a coarse crumb texture. Be sure not to over-process—we still want a nice crunchy texture here, not powder.
Sprinkle the Pecan Parmesan all over the salad. Toss on a handful or two of dried cranberries. Wrap and place in the fridge for 30 to 60 minutes to soften, or you can simply enjoy it right away. In the past, I’ve tried letting this salad sit overnight in the fridge and I greatly prefer the flavor of the salad served the day of, so I don’t recommend making this salad the day before and letting it sit in the fridge overnight.
Tips: Instead of a mini processor, you can chop/whisk the dressing and pecan “Parmesan” by hand.
For a nut-free version, try using breadcrumbs instead of pecans.

CUTTING-EDGE TRAINING:  Did you know our trainers have started incorporating REDCORD/ACTIVCORE training for our one-on-one training clients?  By using this equipment, we can help our clients learn to function in healthier movement patterns, recognizing that our muscles are large connected bands. Sometimes if we experience pain, it is due to the fact that our automatic pilot is not firing or using the correct muscles to perform a certain movement. I recently went for my first ActiveCore certification in December, and I am really excited to help our trainers and our clients set and reach new goals in 2017.  Some people have lower back pain, while others have poor core strength or poor range of motion – some people are  inflexible.  When working with Redcord equipment you will use your body’s DEEP core muscles, and you will re-train your body so it no longer moves in dysfunctional patterns.

 PAY-IT-FORWARD . . .

This is going to be a fun event for the whole family, so please come and show your support!

UPCOMING EVENTS – STEPS TOGETHER:  I’m so happy that awareness is growing and more people know about our favorite local charity called Steps Together.  They help local families who are experiencing a medical crisis – so they are under a lot of stress due to the illness along with the financial responsibilities.  Do you want to see what kind of events are scheduled for the rest of the year?  Click here to view the Steps Together upcoming events you are welcome to join:  http://www.steps-together.org/calendar

FREE RUNNING “MEET UP” ON SUNDAY MORNINGS Bill Mather (Marathon runner and Steps Together Board Member) started a running group that meets on Sunday mornings in Hillsborough (locations may vary but they are usually by the canal).  If you are interested in meeting up with them, just email Bill so he can keep you in the loop on the time and place:  [email protected] . . . This is a great way to stay in shape – and also a great way to prepare for upcoming 5K’s or half/full marathons.  And don’t forget, it is also a perfect way to start preparing for the Steeplechase Run (which also benefits Steps Together) that takes place in Hillsborough at the end of September

SWEAT ANGELS & !MPACT TRAINING:  We found another way to give back . . . For the month of May we are partnering with Watsi. Every time an !MPACT client checks in on Facebook, it helps provide a life-changing surgery to someone in need.  In April we were excited to partner with “The Autism Site” to provide autism therapy for children and their families.  So please remember to “check-in” on facebook (daily) to help each cause.  During the month of March, for every 2 Facebook check-ins, a meal was provided for a child in need #meals4kids.   In February, our hashtag for all Facebook check-ins was #guidingeyes.  So for every 3 Facebook check-ins, a bowl of dog food was given to a guide dog . . . taking care of the furry friends who take care of their guides.  And every month there is a different cause, and the more Facebook check-ins we get, the more the Sweat Angels donates . So far our program at !MPACT has donated 12,050 gallons of clean water to those in need, 784 bowls of food to pets in shelters, bricks to help build a school, cancer screenings for those who would not have been able to afford them, Toys for tots in December, and our hash tag with every January check-in on Facebook #keepamericawarm stands for our donations to purchase coats for those in need.  So for every 10 check-ins, we donate one coat to the needy.  Sweat Angels receives a monthly contribution from !MPACT that makes us feel good!  We will keep you posted on next month’s charity . . . It’s fun giving to different causes every month – there’s enough pie for everyone!

 CONGRATULATIONS ARE IN ORDER!

CONGRATS TO TWO OF OUR DEDICATED BOOTCAMPERS . . . DAVE BARKER AND DAN WOLEN who finished yet another Spartan Race in Vernon, New Jersey over the weekend.  The dedication to your training surely pays off once you hit that mountain.  So happy and proud of you guys . . . And great job Dave, finishing 16th overall and 2nd in your age group . . .Outstanding!  BIG CONGRATS to both of you guys!

CONGRATULATIONS TO my teammate, Bruce – with his amazing before and after photos (pictured above), along with his story . . . . . “Never going back! I look back on where I started, I was tired, out of shape and desperate! In my 50’s and accepting that this was just the way it was! I would never be healthy and fit again! Two years in the gym and really nothing has changed.  I needed a change in my life so when a friend reached out to me about nutritional cleansing, I was very skeptical! Who knew that brown box would have such a profound impact? Almost a year later I am a different person both physically and emotionally. I took a chance and gave it 100%. The change came quickly and I fell in love with the process, I fell in love with the way it made me feel and look. I have friends telling me I look the best I have looked in 20 years! Talk about an ego boost, I got my life back and I will never go back to where I was!”

NOTE FROM HILLARIE – Month of May: OK so Memorial Day Weekend is a coming soon – Hope you are dusting off that BBQ grill and cleaning up the yard to get ready for summer . . . I know we are (or should I say Mike is LOL!).  We are also excited to make use of the shore house that my mom and dad left to my siblings and I.  Good times together with family, and the crisp ocean breeze – can’t wait.  There is something almost spiritual about the beach – especially at dusk when everyone has left the beach for the day.  I plan to spend some quiet time there, as life can be so busy that sometimes we forget to stay in the present – we forget to make time to BREATHE and count our blessings.  So this is a little reminder to all of you . . . If your days are hectic and stressful, do your best to carve out time for yourself – even if it is only a few minutes every morning or just before you go to bed at night.  Journaling your thoughts or feelings of gratitude every day can actually change the outcome of your day to put a positive spin on things – it really works.  And make time on a Sunday to set up a game plan for when you will exercise (even if it means getting up 30 minutes earlier) – and also make time for healthy meal planning . . . Gotta have a plan.  If you have tried to come up with a plan over the winter, and you don’t feel like you were very successful, please don’t give up.  Cleaner eating, more exercise, more time dedicated for sleep, time for prayer, and time for getting organized.  You can totally do this.  Remember, the only way to fail is to quit.  We will have no quitters here.  You CAN do this!   If you ever feel like you need a quick conversation or phone call to help you set some goals, just give me a call 908-428-7978 –Hillarie

RWJ SPORTS PHYSICAL THERAPY:  This is a great place to go for any type of physical rehab – and boy, are did a great job on my lower-back pain!  They handle everything from ligament sprains to arthritic pain.  I have always had a strong core and lower back, but I guess my age (47), my strenuous training routine/6 days per week, and the long hours I spend on my feet every day as a trainer can often take a toll on my lower back.  Every now and again, it just tightens up and I am in a lot of pain.  I heavily rely on the physical therapists at Sports Physical Therapy to get me mobile and pain free again!  They have multiple locations, and one of the partners, Jeff Erickson, is a neighbor of mine – great guy!  Can’t say enough about what an awesome facility this is!  Hillsborough location:  908-359-8800, Princeton (609) 419-0455, Somerset (732) 565-5455, Flemington (908) 806-2000.

FRANKLIN MEDICAL GROUP:  Dr. Steven DelMaestro (MD, Internal Medicine) of Hillsborough, NJ was approached to head up Franklin Medical Group – a new medical practice affiliated with Somerset Medical Hospital.  Before taking on this new venture, Dr. DelMaestro had his own practice for 22 years, operating out of his offices in New Brunswick and North Brunswick (NJ).  So . . . when is the last time you had a complete physical?  Your health is so important – and so is finding a doctor who cares and actually takes the time to get to know you and your health history.  Maybe you are presently getting medical care from a practice that is so huge – with so many different doctors that you feel it lacks that personal touch.  Make your health a priority:  908-685-2526 (located @ Franklin Commons, 454 Elizabeth Avenue, Suite 210, Somerset, New Jersey).
