GROUP TRAINING . . . NOT JUST BOOTCAMPS! Although we have a great following for our Total Development Bootcamps, our POWER & Strength Training Sessions, our Fit-STRENGTH Session, and our Elite Athlete Training sessions, we wanted to appeal to those who are looking for more of a fitness “class” to burn fat, tone muscles and get fit.  In December, we introduced two new “classes”. . . Full-Body Fitness is a class we offer on Monday’s at 5:30 p.m., Wednesday’s at 12:30 p.m., Thursday’s at 5:30 p.m. and Friday’s at 10:00 a.m. In this class you will perform basic movements using dumbbells, weighted equipment and functional equipment like medicine balls and balance pads – in addition to fun low-impact, cardio intervals.  It is a great full-body workout!  We are also offering a TRX Class where you will predominantly be using TRX equipment, but we also work in exercises using slide-boards, fitness balls and Bosu balls. How to Get Healthy & Fit . . . Stay Focused IN 2014

Dear Hillarie:  If you could give me some quick tips on how to stay focused and decrease body fat in 2014, what would you say are your top fitness tips?  Sincerely, Karen (Hillsborough, NJ)

Dear Karen:  If you’ve been trying to get healthier and fit and haven’t quite gotten there yet, here are a few tips that can really make a difference. With the holiday season just about over, we  need to be more mindful of what we are consuming.  Here are some helpful tips to lighter and fit in 2014:

  • Drink lots of water:  It flushes fat and toxins and keeps all your muscles and organs healthy and hydrated.  Drink half your body weight in ounces of water (Since I weigh 135 lbs., I drink no less than 68 oz. of water per day. Diet soda and coffee doesn’t count, but decaffeinated coffee and drinks with 5 grams of sugar or less DO count towards your total water intake!).

  • Realize that “input vs. output” is crucial to your success (Input = how many calories you are consuming, and Output = the calories expended during exercise).  If you’ve hit that plateau and are not seeing the pounds drop off the scale, you are either eating more calories than your body needs, or you might not be active enough.  Get moving!

  • Keep a food log so you become accountable for all the foods you consume during the day.  This will also help you figure out your general calorie range – and you can decide whether or not you need to adjust it.  You can log onto www.Livestrong.com to find out how many calories are in some of your favorite foods.

  • Balance” all your meals throughout the day.  This means you should have a healthy balance of carbohydrates with a healthy protein – while keeping fats moderate to low.  Some healthy protein sources:  egg whites or one whole egg, chicken and turkey breast, lean cuts of beef and pork, tofu, low-fat cottage cheese, Greek yogurt, low-fat milk, and protein bars or protein shakes.  Some whole grain carbohydrate sources:  oatmeal, brown rice, sweet potatoes, beans and legumes, whole wheat pasta, whole grain breads, barley and bulgur.

  • Vegetables & Fruits:  Be sure to add 1 cup of vegetables or a ½ cup of fruit to each of your meals . . . nutrition is important too!

  • Portion Control:  Put less on your plate, and drink at least 8 oz. of water with each meal.  In about 10 minutes, your stomach will have signaled your brain that you have eaten, and hunger will pass.  So a healthy example of a dinner would be 4-6 oz. of grilled chicken or fish – and fill the rest of your plate with a hearty vegetable side-dish like 2-3 cups of Spinach, Kale, Cauliflower, Brussel Sprouts, Asparagus, or Bok Choy.  Let this hearty vegetable side-dish fill ¾ of your plate!  And you can use oil to prepare them, just measure 1-2 tablespoons (max) and add a splash of water as you are cooking vegetables along with some salt, pepper and any other spice of your choice.

  • Limit Snacking in the Evening:  One of the biggest mistakes we make is snacking after dinner.  It is a hard habit to break, but if you try really hard, you will see amazing results.  Keep raw vegetables on hand and make the commitment to stop snacking.  Sometimes having a glass of skim milk is a GREAT way to shut down the hunger valve so you are not going to bed hungry.  And this is also a great way to get a little extra calcium into your diet.

  • Exercise, exercise, exercise:  Let us help you with this piece of the puzzle!  !MPACT Training will set you up for success – and we take your abilities, age and fitness level into consideration.  You can’t lose!!  Consistency is the key to your success:  Remember, if you are diligent with your workouts and are more conscious of consuming fewer calories and eating balanced meals, you WILL see results.  Just stick to your plan as often as possible.  Be GREAT on your diet plan 85% of the time!

!MPACT MENU AT TENDER LOVIN GRILL (TLG):  If any of you haven’t made your way into the restaurant that opened last year at the corner of Rt. 206 and Amwell Road, you are really missing out.  Not only is the food delicious, but nothing is processed or purchased frozen . . . everything on their menu is freshly made.  So I met with the owners of TLG, Steve and Maribeth to talk about implementing an !MPACT Menu – which would be delicious foods that are also calorie-conscious.  So if you live or work locally in Hillsborough, you can stop in to check out the !MPACT Menu and know you are staying on track with your weight-loss plan.  We will keep copies of the !MPACT Menu at our front desk so our clients can pick up lunch or dinner on days when they just don’t have time to cook a healthy meal.  And Steve & Maribeth will also have copies at their counter.  We are just making the finishing touches on the menu so it will be available on January 2nd.

PHYSICAL THERAPY AND PERSONAL TRAINING MEET FOR OPTIMAL SUCCESS:  I was recently introduced to Mark Nagel, Physical Therapist and owner of Belle Mead Physical Therapy, and we instantly started chatting about the importance of proper conditioning to prevent injury.  In addition to working with middle-aged patients and seniors, Mark works with a large population of teen athletes from Hillsborough High School and helps the athletes gain their range of motion and functionality after an injury – and then guides them into personal training to continue their progress.  Although he is equipped to do all of this at his facility on Amwell Road, we discussed !MPACT Training helping to transition the athletes back out onto the field.   Mark and I also discussed having him come to !MPACT Training in February to host a lecture for exercise enthusiasts as well as athletes and their parents to gain a better understanding of how to prevent injury and recover from an injury.  Instead of over-training and taking our bodies for granted, it is critical to understand the mechanics of the body and how to treat it properly.  There is nothing worse than an injury slowing down your fitness plan or sports career.  And Mark will also provide a free consultation and evaluation to help determine imbalances that can be perfected with corrective exercises.  Female athletes tend to have a lot of knee issues, and much of that is based upon how they walk and run and the position of their knees when they land after an explosive movement.  Hip flexibility is also another problem for exercise enthusiasts and athletes, along with tight hamstrings playing a role in lower back problems.  We’ll keep you posted as to the date in February we set for Mark to address our group at !MPACT, so stay tuned.  If you want to speak to him about a free evaluation for yourself (for an injury you’ve been nursing) or for your teen athlete, just give his office a call at:  908-281-6515.

Christmas Dinner Many THANKS to our generous clients who contributed towards the dinner for a local family in need.  Through their donations, we were able to give Shop-Rite gift cards and a gorgeous fruit basket (thanks, Inger!) to Donna and Stephen of Hillsborough.  Donna is Stephen’s grandmother – and he lives with her as a result of losing his mother to breast cancer last year.  They are beneficiaries of www.STEPS-TOGETHER.com, and over the summer they also lost their home to a fire.  The re-construction of their home is almost done so let’s keep them in our thoughts and prayers.  Donna was so appreciative of our gift.  Pay-it-forward!!!

TENDER LOVIN GRILL:  What a great little place this is – on the corner of Amwell Rd. and Rt. 206 in Hillsborough (that little strip mall near Five Guys).  The owners of this establishment, Marybeth and Steve, are Hillsborough residents for 20 years, and Steve was in the food franchise business prior to opening Tender Lovin Grill.  He and his wife are passionate about FRESH food vs. the frozen and pre-packaged foods that are served at chain restaurants.  We had a delicious Pork Carnitos that was made with hand-rubbed, slow-roasted pork – on a thin whole wheat wrap – with rice, beans, cheese, tomatoes, onion and spices.  It was out of this world.  They have home-made soups, marinated grilled chicken, salads, daily specials and more.  They are open 7 days per week from 11:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m. (12-7 p.m. on Sundays).  We plan to take our kids back for their funnel cakes or waffles and ice cream.  Reasonably priced – pretty inside so you can dine in or take out . . . overall . . . great experience.  Give this new business a chance.
