HERE IS YOUR JULY NEWSLETTER:
Dear Hillarie: Linda from Somerville writes: Staying in shape can be so difficult during the summer months. I lost 10 pounds over the last two months, and I don’t want all these barbeques and summer festivities to weaken my momentum. I don’t want to put those 10 pounds back on. I find it extremely difficult to be disciplined when attending summer time parties. Do you have any suggestions so I can still enjoy my friends and family AND also meet my weight loss goals? I’d love to lose 8-10 more pounds and don’t want to be in limbo all summer. PLEASE HELP!
Dear Linda: I feel like my telephone must be tapped (haha) because I have this conversation all the time with my sisters and my close friends. Staying in shape over the summer can be extremely difficult but it CAN be done. Let’s take the challenge together. First, you need to have a plan of attack when having your own BBQ or when attending someone else’s barbecue . . . by making or bringing “diet friendly” foods. Some examples would be:
Buffalo Chicken Salad with Bleu Cheese Dressing: I love to serve this when I have family or friends over. It is a simple addition to any BBQ . . . The salad dressing can be found at your local supermarket in the produce/refrigerated section. The brand name is Bolthouse Farms Bleu Cheese Dressing, and it is a yogurt-based dressing that you will really love (low-calorie, low-fat and no preservatives or artificial ingredients!). I marinate the chicken breasts in Steve’s & Ed’s Wing Sauce that I purchase at Shop-Rite (all natural wing sauce with only a handful of ingredients) – then I grill the chicken and serve it over a nice tossed salad (mixed greens & chopped veggies) with the Bleu Cheese salad dressing as an option. Seriously, it is delicious and you will feel like you are eating a selection from your local sports bar (yet you won’t have all the extra hidden calories).
Another item I make when I have a BBQ (or I bring this when I am attending a friend’s BBQ) is a delicious, protein- enriched pasta salad. Here is all you need:
Chicken & Vegetable Pasta Salad:
– Box of Barilla PLUS Pasta (this brand has 10 grams of protein and tastes just like regular pasta)
– 1 pound of grilled chicken – diced (use your favorite seasonings or rub prior to grilling)
– 2 red or green peppers (chopped)
– ½ Vidalia onion – chopped (optional)
– 2 cups of raw broccoli florets – broken apart into tiny pieces
– 1 cup of sliced carrots
– Add any other diced vegetables you desire!
– 1 bottle of your favorite Low-Fat Italian Dressing
Just cook your pasta (rinse with cold water, then drain), add your diced veggies, chop your grilled chicken into tiny cubes, and add a bottle of low-fat Italian Dressing & mix thoroughly. It makes a great pasta salad that is super healthy!
Also, when hosting your own BBQ, be sure to put out a veggie platter as an appetizer, and you can use 0% fat Greek yogurt with a sprinkle (to taste) of Lipton’s Onion Soup Mix to create a yummy dip that is also super healthy and protein-enriched. And among your desserts should be a fruit platter so you can make a healthier choice and still enjoy something sweet. If you are having alcoholic beverages, limit it to two glasses – and just make a rule that you have a bottle of water in those drinks.
Don’t forget to incorporate some exercise on the morning of your party or BBQ, and think about squeezing in some exercise the next day as a way to burn off some extra calories. And lastly, don’t arrive at your party or BBQ starving. If it starts at 5:00 p.m., have a low-calorie, protein drink right before you leave the house (Myoplex Lite from EAS, 100-Calorie Muscle Milk Lite or an Oh Yeah Protein Drink make great choices). You will have a better chance of avoiding too many appetizers if you give your stomach something light before you leave for the party. The worse thing is to arrive hungry/ravenous – then the damage done with all kinds of chips and salsa and other goodies is hard to un-do!
Sounds like it takes work to stay healthy and fit over the summer – but it is better than coming into September with another 10 pounds to lose. It’s just a matter of “planning” and maybe cooking a few things you might not have thought of otherwise! Good luck this summer, Linda & stay in touch!
Fit by Hill Bootcamps!: watch preview: http://youtu.be/n2Rk04DmmnA And stay tuned for the newest video of our June Bootcampers working hard – coming soon!!! Thank you, Kristyna, for getting up early to video tape! Here’s the skinny on my bootcamps: They take place every Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 6:00 a.m. – 7:00 a.m., but you must register since space is limited. The location: Sports Physical Therapy, 1 Jill Court in Hillsborough, NJ. This place is spacious, bright, & clean. And this type of training is going to be a great way to get in shape. I know these bootcamps are early in the morning, but there is no better way to start your day, and then you don’t have to worry about making excuses later in the day. So many things come up in our busy lives, and our exercise routine can often get put off due to our family obligations or jobs or whatever. Put yourself first by starting FIRST THING IN THE MORNING . . . Let’s do this! If all goes well, I may begin to adding more of these classes in the fall! These bootcamps are for both men and women – and it is also open to teenagers (ages 16 and up). We’ll work hard together (upper body exercises, lower body exercises, mixed with athletic training), but please know there are variations to the exercises so you can go at your own pace and when you need a break, you can jog in place or even march/walk in place. Or if you have any minor specific issues (weak lower back, shoulder pain, etc), there will always be something you can do in place of an exercise that you feel might aggravate your condition. You will need to bring dumbbells, a mat, a water bottle and a towel . . . but most of all bring your energy! To get registration forms contact Hillarie via email or phone (908) 371-0173 or [email protected]
CLIENT – TESTIMONIAL UPDATE!: Congratulations Rocky Falcetano . . . down 57 pounds in 12 weeks! Rocky lost 100 pounds prior to joining Fitness by Hillarie – that in itself is amazing. But when Rocky found his weight loss at a “stand-still” he went on the internet to see how he could lose the last 50-60 pounds he had planned to lose in order to get down to a healthier body weight. That is when Rocky found the Fitness by Hillarie website! We started with a two-hour nutrition session and mapped out exactly what he should be eating (based on his likes and dislikes) and even the times he should be eating. The reason why Rocky had trouble losing those last 50 pounds prior to coming for nutritional training was because he really wasn’t eating enough throughout the day – so his body was in a state of starvation – which makes it very difficult to lose weight. Also, his insulin levels were constantly fluctuating due to unbalanced/high-carb, low-calorie meals. We got Rocky on a plan to succeed, and when I tell you he followed this diet plan to a “T”, I am not exaggerating. Rocky hadn’t really been exercising regularly so now he started incorporating weight training and cardio exercise during the week – in addition to coming for weekly workouts with Fitness by Hillarie! These additional workouts greatly contributed to his success. So how did Rocky become so successful on his plan? He changed his LIFESTYLE! He changed his daily diet, he’s drinking more water (and it is not his favorite beverage!), and he began to incorporate weight training and cardiovascular training to his weekly routine. The plan actually works if you really make it a priority. Rocky says that it took him 51 years to turn his life around. That’s OK, Rocky, so glad you found the strength and discipline to finally do it!

SPORTS PHYSICAL THERAPY: This is a great place to go for any type of physical rehab – and boy, are they doing a great job on my lower-back pain! They handle everything from ligament sprains to arthritic pain. I have always had a strong core and lower back, but I guess my age (46), my strenuous training routine/6 days per week, and the long hours I spend on my feet every day as a trainer are taking a toll on my lower back. Every now and again, it just tightens up and I am in a lot of pain. I heavily rely on the physical therapists at Sports Physical Therapy to get me mobile and pain free again!
