HERE IS YOUR SEPTEMBER NEWSLETTER:
Let’s Cleanse This Fall!!: Following a “cleansing” plan (also known as a detox diet) is a great way to start your fall season. These cleansing plans are designed to help our bodies rid themselves of excess toxins and fats, as well as excess water (bloating). Although we breathe toxins in the air every day, most of the toxins in our bodies come from the foods we eat, the beverages we drink, and also the medicines we take (prescription or over-the-counter medicines). Remember, everything we consume (good or bad) gets processed through our digestive system – and then gets disbursed throughout the body. And when our bodies are overloaded with these toxins, we tend to feel sluggish and tired, unmotivated and sometimes anxious or even depressed. Because of the imbalance in our bodies caused by this burden of toxins, we are also faced with cravings for junk foods and carbohydrates – and we often experience mood swings. It would be so much easier to jump start your fitness plan (diet and exercise program) by starting out with a 7-14 day detox or cleansing plan. You can use supplements to enhance your cleansing process, but many times I just use healthy foods that have cleansing qualities – in addition to eliminating foods that bring toxins into the body, and the results are amazing!
FOODS TO AVOID: If you were to research how to effectively follow a detox diet, you would see most plans suggest you take out food products that contain the following five ingredients: caffeine, alcohol, dairy, gluten, and sugars. Also, you want to be sure you are also avoiding food additives or processed ingredients like high-fructose corn syrup and hydrogenated oils – as well as high-fat foods and even chocolate (since it has both sugar and caffeine). Also, omit condiments and processed seasoning of any kind. All of these food products or ingredients can slow down the cleansing or detox process. You can easily identify foods or beverages that contain dairy, sugars, caffeine and alcohol – but you may have to read your labels to avoid gluten. It is found in all wheat products and most starches . . . so it is in most breakfast cereals, breads, crackers and processed carbs of any kind! Therefore, if you would like to have a hot gluten-free breakfast cereal, you will find them in the organic section of your supermarket and it will clearly state “gluten free” on the label. Rice is also a starch that does not contain gluten, so you might find a rice cereal for breakfast, and can have brown rice as a side dish for lunch (see diet below).
FOODS YOU ARE ALLOWED TO EAT: Although there are several foods that are best to avoid while cleansing, there are plenty of healthy foods you can eat. These include: vegetables, fruits (in moderation), brown rice, whole grains, beans, healthy oils and nuts. You can also use natural seasonings like turmeric, oregano, paprika, garlic, and all your favorite spices (Mrs. Dash is a great choice too – and it is sodium free!). Some detox plans avoid proteins but because of my bodybuilding background (and my understanding of our how easy it is to burn away our valuable muscles), I always try to incorporate lean proteins. I avoid red meat all together – and I include protein drinks and small portions of proteins like poultry and fish (organic is best). I also consider buying organic for my fruits, vegetables and whole grains (during a cleanse) but don’t feel you have to do so – just be sure to wash your fruits and vegetables really well. Also, try to make it your goal to get 25-35 grams of fiber each day – read nutritional labels and eat lots of veggies. So now you know why you are cleansing – now let’s put it all together and follow a cleansing diet!
Organize your shopping list . . . this is what you will need:
FRESH LEMONS (for lemon Water): During your cleansing process, it is important to sip on water throughout the day. And every 2 hours, drink 10 oz. of room temperature water with the juice from ¼- ½ lemon squeezed into it. Try to drink a gallon throughout the day if you can! You will see in the sample diet, I’ve worked some of this water into your meal plan to ensure you drink it!
RAW VEGGIES: Slice up plenty of raw veggies (make a list of your favorites – mine are cucumber slices, red peppers, and asparagus), and use these as snacks throughout the day whenever you are hungry.
LETTUCE/GREENS & SALAD FIXINS’: Create beautiful salads with plenty of mixed greens and even add some red cabbage since it has great detox qualities.
FROZEN VEGGIES: These make easy side-dishes for dinner – just be sure to get plain frozen vegetables – like broccoli or spinach or brussel sprouts, etc. that do not contain any flavorings, salt or sauces.
FRESH FRUITS: Although we want to limit our fruits to one or two servings per day when cleansing (due to natural sugars), fruits are also loaded with vitamins and antioxidants so we can still incorporate them. I often have an orange with my breakfast or some organic strawberries with a serving of raw almonds as a snack when cleansing.
LEAN PROTEINS: Have lean proteins on hand – make some hard-boiled organic eggs (or scrambled eggwhites) and have them for breakfast or lunch. I only eat the whites – and I have it with some diced fruit or raw veggies. I also snack on edamame (soy beans in the pods) whenever I need something to munch on. This is a great source of protein – try them if you’ve never had them – I get them frozen at Costco. Chicken breasts, turkey breast and organic fish are also great sources of lean protein so add them to your list. Tofu is another great source of protein, and you can pan-fry it with a little olive oil and natural spices in place of chicken, turkey or fish for a vegetarian lunch or dinner.
PROTEIN DRINKS: I love Designer Whey Protein Powder – that is sweetened with natural Stevia. To stave off hunger, I use this as one of my snacks and sometimes as my protein source for breakfast instead of eggwhites. I get the Designer Whey at my Shop-Rite – but if you can’t find it there, you can get it at your local health food store or The Vitamin Shoppe (www.vitaminshoppe.com).
BROWN RICE: This is a starch carb that is gluten-free and makes a great side dish (1/2 cup serving is a perfect portion). See recipe for bean salad within diet plan.
BEANS: Organic/canned beans are great and easy – I love Garbanzo beans and kidney beans (one serving is ½ cup).
GLUTEN-FREE CEREAL: I love Bob’s Red Mill Mighty Tasty Hot Cereal found in the organic section of my supermarket. You can have a serving (1/2 cup cooked) with your breakfast (eggwhites or protein drink and fresh fruit). Sometimes I add the cereal to breakfast when I am hungry and sometimes I just have my protein and fruit.
NUTS: I buy the 100-Calorie snack bags of RAW almonds (no processing or flavoring). These make a great snack, and I love the control of portion sizes when using the 100-Calorie bags.
OLIVE OIL: I use a healthy oil like olive oil on my salads (1 tbsp.) or on my vegetables.
NATURAL SPICES: “Mrs. Dash” makes great natural seasonings without salt! But use your favorite natural seasonings to taste.
Sample Diet:
Please recognize that you “might” find yourself hungry on a low-calorie (low-starch) diet as outlined . . . but just keep munching on raw veggies whenever you are hungry and keep drinking your lemon water – it will help turn off your hunger valve! Just do your best to keep busy and get through those first few hungry days! Also, look over the sample diet below and then make up your food shopping list to make sure you have what you need on hand. Start on a Monday, and do some cooking/preparation on Sunday (like making your hard-boiled eggs and cooked veggies and even bake or grill some chicken to use on top of your salad for lunch).
Breakfast: Designer Whey Protein powder (any flavor) mixed with water OR 4 scrambled eggwhites + 1 orange + 10 oz. lemon water
Mid-Morning Snack: 100 Calorie Snack bag of Raw Almonds + 3 small strawberries and 10 oz. lemon water
Lunch: Large salad with cup of your favorite raw veggies on top – and feel free to add some shredded red cabbage since it has great detox qualities. Add 4 oz. of grilled organic chicken breast – and for dressing, use 1 tablespoon of olive oil with juice from ½ lemon squeezed on top + sprinkle of black pepper and your favorite spices (like Mrs. Dash!). With your salad, you can have a ½ cup of brown rice (plain or use natural spices). I sprinkle the brown rice into my salad – it makes it more filling.
Mid-Afternoon Snack: 12 Asparagus spears (raw, grilled or lightly cooked in a frying pan) OR have a cup of your favorite raw or cooked veggies. If you are feeling extra hungry and the vegetables just won’t cut it, then have a ½ cup of bean salad (recipe below). It is very satisfying – don’t forget to drink your 10 oz. of lemon water!!
Dinner: 6 oz. of fish (your favorite kind) or 6 oz. chicken or turkey breast – grilled or baked + 2 cups of cooked vegetables + 10 oz. lemon water. You can substitute tofu for your fish or poultry if you desire. You can also have a ½ cup of your favorite beans with dinner. Bean Salad Recipe: I buy a can of organic Garbanzo beans and create a bean salad by adding some chopped Vidalia onion (1 tablespoon), red peppers (about 2 tablespoons), a tablespoon of fresh chopped cilantro, 2 tablespoons of rice vinegar, and a tablespoon of oil and sprinkle with garlic powder and black pepper.
Evening: Nothing to eat after dinner – just have a cup of decaf green tea or chamomile tea and go to bed early.
If you can follow this plan for 7 days, you are one step closer to reaching your health and fitness goals. I try to follow it for 14 days, and I can’t tell you how great I feel at the end of 2 weeks! Give it a shot! If you feel you need more one-on-one help putting together a customized detox plan (based on food allergies and likes/dislikes) or if you need a diet plan once you are done with your detox plan, call me to set up a nutritional counseling appointment (908) 371-0173.

Rocky is still losing . . . my latest “Biggest Loser” is now down 71 lbs. and has reached his goal weight of 219/220 range. Says he never felt better. I’m leaving his “before” and “after” pictures up for the month of September to help motivate everyone! In case you didn’t see my previous newsletters, Rocky found my website 5 months ago and wanted to take his weight loss to the next level. He had lost 100 pounds on his own (great job, Rock!), but had gotten “stuck” where he had more weight to lose but just couldn’t do it. After we met, we quickly realized Rocky wasn’t eating nearly enough food so his body was in a state of starvation (resisting further weight loss). He also wasn’t exercising regularly and wasn’t drinking enough water. So we put him on a nutritional plan to succeed – and started incorporating weight training sessions with me, along with dedicated trips to the gym to reshape his body. Here we are 5 months later, and he is down ANOTHER 71 POUNDS for a total of 171 pounds! Rocky started out at 390 pounds ONE year ago, and today is weighing 219!! Look at the difference! You are such a star student, Rocky, which is why I decided to leave your pictures on my home page for the month of September too! Congrats!

SPORTS PHYSICAL THERAPY: This is a great place to go for any type of physical rehab – and boy, are they doing a great job on my lower-back pain! They handle everything from ligament sprains to arthritic pain. I have always had a strong core and lower back, but I guess my age (46), my strenuous training routine/6 days per week, and the long hours I spend on my feet every day as a trainer are taking a toll on my lower back. Every now and again, it just tightens up and I am in a lot of pain. I heavily rely on the physical therapists at Sports Physical Therapy to get me mobile and pain free again!
