Let’s Get Healthier!

October 2011 Newsletter

My October Newsletter is dedicated to:  Jeanne-Marie Finan, a life-long, family friend who lost her battle to Melanoma (skin cancer) last month.  Jeanne-Marie (age 48) was married with two young, teenage daughters and was only recently diagnosed with this silent killer.  She was a wonderful person who always thought about everyone else before thinking of herself.  That is what I will remember most about her.  Her parents, who we fondly refer to as Aunt Kathy & Uncle Bill – and her sister, Jacqueline, are all in my family’s thoughts and prayers.  Let Jeanne-Marie’s untimely death bring awareness that we need to go for annual body scans at the dermatologist.  And in her memory let’s remember to be kind to one another – along with this phrase “though shall not judge” – both of these are things which she strongly demonstrated in her every-day life.  Rest in peace, sweetie . . . we miss you already.

HERE IS YOUR OCTOBER NEWSLETTER:

Fit & Fun CampWe had a blast! Preview what we did this summer at camp:   http://youtu.be/YVRH-aJ5-t0 – fun song – fun video!  Parents, thanks for sharing your kids with me!  As you can see, we play hard, but they also work really hard!

Sports Nutrition:  Why is it important that athletes learn to fuel their bodies?  Hillarie recently visited the Basking Ridge High School Girls’ Volleyball Team – and is set to visit the Raritan Valley Community College Baseball Team – to give a sports nutrition lecture in an effort to teach them how to “fuel their bodies for optimal performance”.  If you are an athlete or parent of an athlete, then please read on . . .

Food becomes “fuel” when you are talking about an athlete.  Remember, proteins feed/build muscle, and carbohydrates get stored in the muscle to be used as energy during training or games/matches.  Fast food contain so many processed ingredients so the body doesn’t really recognize it as a legitimate “fuel” source – rather as a lot of “garbage and toxins” that the digestive system has to waste time sorting through.  These coagulated fats can also encourage intramuscular fat – which greatly affects the “quality” of our muscles and will therefore, affect your speed and performance.  So did you realize that if you are an athlete, your performance is a direct reflection of a few things:  1) training & preparation for the event, 2) rest & recovery (prior to the event), and 3) your daily diet during training along with pre-event meal(s).  Therefore, if it is game day, don’t show up on an empty stomach and claim that you get nervous jitters and don’t like to eat!  Instead, plan your meals so you are eating a balance of proteins (and carbs about an hour and a half before the game, and bring supplements (protein bars or drinks) to have at half-time or right after the game (until you can get to a healthy meal).  Drink plenty of water – for an athlete, take your weight and cut it in half – and that is how many ounces you should be drinking per day.  Since I weigh 130 pounds, I should have a minimum of 65 oz. per day + more during exercise.  Your performance is also greatly affected by hydration so please don’t forget to drink WATER.  And you don’t need all those sugary sports drinks.  Excess sugars can increase energy levels (temporarily) – only to find yourself crashing shortly after.  Stick to water and lower-sugar sports drinks like G2 from Gatorade.  And to the moms out there that give their kids regular Gatorade or PowerAde during sports events or just as a beverage with dinner, please know that their bodies DO NOT need all those excess sugars.  I train many kids who are experiencing a weight problem (especially ages 9-17) – they might be skinny when they are in elementary school but once they hit intermediate school or middle school, many run into a problem with bodyfat settling in their mid-sections.  Let them EAT their calories – not drink them.  If you feel you need special guidance for your child or teenager, please call me and we can set up a fun, interactive nutritional appointment for you and your child/teen so they learn to fuel their bodies for optimal performance.  Some teens with a fast metabolism need to gain weight for a particular sport/position – other kids need to decrease bodyfat to enhance speed and performance.  The right nutritional plan is essential to their success – and they can use these tools right through their adolescence, college years and adult life. Over the summer, I provided a FREE brief sports nutrition lecture for the Jr. Raiders Football League – and I am happy to say these kids (grades 3rd through 8th) asked some great questions and were very interested in learning to fuel their bodies properly.  So PARENTS, let’s help them out and make sure they eat right!  Their bodies will be forever grateful!

Fitness by Hill will be even more “cutting-edge” this fall!

Hillarie has been accepted into a private mentorship program in San Diego, California (only 20 trainers from around the globe!) under the direction of Todd Durkin, MA, CSCS.  The program will run from October 19th through October 23rd  This is an unbelievable opportunity for Hillarie as she not only will learn advanced training techniques, but she will also gain valuable information about how to successfully expand her business by offering even more programs to assist all fitness levels.  These cutting-edge training and nutritional programs will be used when training elite athletes, in addition to your average (yet eager) fitness enthusiasts (young and old) who wish to reshape their bodies or just wish to get healthier.  Todd Durkin is an internationally recognized performance-enhancement coach, personal trainer, massage therapist, author of “Impact Training”, and speaker who motivates, educates and inspires people worldwide.  Todd trains dozens of NFL and MLB athletes, including Super Bowl XLIV MVP Drew Brees, Super Bowl XLV Aaron Rodgers, former NFL MVP LaDainian Tomlinson, and athletes such as Kellen Winslow, Shawne Merriman, and a host of others. He currently works with 9 NFL quarterbacks. Additionally, he has trained one Olympic Gold Medalist, an MLB Champion & MVP, two X-Games Gold medalists, 2 Heisman trophy winners, and thousands of other elite and amateur athletes as well as fitness enthusiasts.  Additionally, Todd is the Head of the Under Armour Performance Training Council, where he helps drive new methodologies and training techniques to help Under Armour develop the highest quality programs and apparel for performance training.  Bottom line . . . Fitness by Hillarie clients better watch out when she gets back from San Diego (LOL)!  If you thought she was tough now, wait till the end of October.

Fit by Hill Bootcamps!:  Bootcamps are continuing in Hillsborough – Fitness by Hillarie is putting a difference “spin” on bootcamp training so consider this type of training to be GROUP PERSONAL TRAINING or another way I like to explain it is METABOLIC RESISTENCE TRAINING . . . since this type of activity burns more calories & helps to increase lean muscle mass!  We use weights, athletic drills and core exercises that require you to use your body’s own resistance . . . Bottom line, it is a great way to get into the best shape of your life.  All fitness levels welcome (variations to exercises will be available)!  I’ll even throw some free diet tips your way during our workouts!  Don’t miss the fun, sweat and fitness results you are looking for!  Space is limited so you need to register.  You can also preview this short video so you can see one of our bootcamps – in ACTION:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=45FdNHoRXrI

Here’s the skinny on my bootcamps:  They take place every Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 6:00 a.m. – 7:00 a.m., AND WE JUST ADDED ANOTHER ONE ON SATURDAY MORNINGS FROM 6-7:00 A.M.!  WE’VE ALSO ADDED AN EVENING BOOTCAMP ON WEDNESDAY’S FROM 6:30 – 7:30 P.M.  The location for my bootcamps?: Sports Physical Therapy, 1 Jill Court in Hillsborough, NJ.  This place is spacious, bright, & clean.  This camp is for men and women (and teens ages 16 and up). Make a commitment . . . Don’t put it off any longer.  Come join me!  You will need to bring dumbbells, a mat, a water bottle and a towel . . . but most of all bring your energy!  To get registration forms contact Hillarie via email or phone (908) 371-0173 or [email protected]

½ MarathonCongrats to one of my dedicated “bootcampers” Adrienne Matrulli (of Hillsborough, NJ) who entered her first ½ Marathon in Philadelphia on September 18th.  Adrienne is married and is a busy mother of two boys (2nd and 4th grade), and she made the time to train and stay focused.  Adrienne finished the 13 mile race in 2 hours 16 minutes – Awesome!  Training for any type of marathon requires discipline and dedication . . . Adrienne: all your fellow bootcampers are really proud of you (AND ME TOO)!

LACES FOR LIFE: The Janet Fund, New Jersey’s advocate for the prevention of sudden cardiac arrest, is running a campaign throughout the month of October called Laces for Life in order to raise awareness for National Sudden Cardiac Arrest Awareness Month.

Sudden cardiac arrest claims the lives of more than 325,000 Americans each year, the equivalent of 1,000 people each day, or one person dying each minute.

High school and youth groups, and cheerleading and band organizations throughout Morris, Somerset, Middlesex, Hunterdon, and Union counties will be wearing red shoe laces to build awareness about sudden cardiac arrest in youth.

“This is a very simple and powerful message that the youth of New Jersey can send to our state representatives that they want to be protected from sudden cardiac arrest by having Janet’s Law passed,” said Jim Zilinski who founded the Janet Fund with his wife, Karen in the wake of their daughter Janet’s tragic passing from sudden cardiac arrest in 2006.

Janet’s Law would require:
• Require all public and private schools K-12 to have an AED on site.
• Require at least five school employees to be certified in CPR/AED.
• Require an emergency action plan for a sudden cardiac event
• Require AEDs to be located in an accessible, unlocked location (such as outside school gym) with appropriate signs above the unit.
• Require signs directing people to the AED throughout the school.
• Require AED to be accessible after school hours if the school doors are open. (such as youth basket ball, wrestling, after-school programs, etc)
• Recommend all youth sports coaches and camp counselors be CPR and AED certified.
• Recommend all public playing fields and youth camp facilities have an AED.

“There is no cost to participate, but donations are always welcome,” Mr. Zilinski said. “The donations all go towards our mission of saving young hearts, one at a time.”

If you know of a team or school group that would like to join the awareness campaign, contact: Mr. Zilinski at [email protected].
