SEE LABOR DAY WEEKEND TRAINING CALENDAR + September Group Training Calendar: See attached JPG File on home page to view our September training calendar for adults, teens and kids. Why are our clients seeing such amazing results? Our TD (Total Development Bootcamps) follows the HIIT method of training (High Intensity Interval Training). For example, you might perform a high-energy exercise for 60 seconds, followed by an interval where more strength is required and your heart-rate drops a bit. These kinds of workouts build lean muscle and burn fat! All fitness levels are welcome – you can work at your own pace with the guidance from our trainers. Check out our Monthly Training Calendar to see all the days and times we offer this amazing training! Print it out to keep it handy! Drop-ins welcome! Let’s get back on track now that our beach days are over till next summer!

Great Recipe for Muffins This Fall: Thank you, Leigh Johnson (!MPACT Client) for this awesome recipe. Of course, I add 1.5 scoops of French Vanilla Designer Whey Protein Powder to this recipe as a great way to get a balanced breakfast (my kids LOVE these muffins).
Pumpkin Muffins:
1 box of spice cake mix
1 can of pumpkin (not pumpkin pie filling)
2 eggwhites
½ bag cinnamon chips
1.5 scoops of Designer Protein (French Vanilla flavor)
Mix all the ingredients together. Add a little water (maybe ½ of the pumpkin can). Bake at 350 for about 15 minutes.

FREE Nutrition Event: !MPACT Training is going food shopping . . . Wanna come? DATE: Sunday, September 16th at 8:00 a.m. This “Nutritional Event” is FREE for everyone – not just for !MPACT clients! Please email or call to register so we have enough handouts.  Then you will report to !MPACT Training promptly at 8:00 a.m. on the 16th. We will provide helpful nutrition handouts and an overview of what we are trying to accomplish on our shopping trip. Then we will head over to the Hillsborough Shop-Rite to shop together. Why are we doing this? When owner, Hillarie Scannelli, was operating Fitness by Hillarie out of her home training studio, she often took her clients food shopping in an effort to help them put together an organized meal plan for the week. They would prepare their food shopping list using a handy template Hillarie created in Microsoft PowerPoint, and this would set up her clients for a successful week on their diet – and also taught them more about reading labels. Well, we’ve had a few requests to do this again, so get ready . . . Let’s get back on track with our diets . . . The kids will be back in school, there will be fewer parties and poolside gatherings, and we can get into a healthier routine. Just drop an email to let us know you plan to come: [email protected] or call 908-428-7978.

!MPACT Training Provides Sports Nutritional Counseling for Hillsborough High School Raiders: Hillarie Scannelli, Co-Owner @ !MPACT, was extremely excited to be welcomed by the Hillsborough High School Football Team, as she presented them with critical sports nutrition information on August 1st. This is just one way we can !MPACT our community – getting these young athletes ready for another season – and making sure they are healthy! As with any sport, some players need to gain weight and add lean muscle for their assigned position and other players wish to decrease body fat to enhance their speed and overall performance. There is a science behind how to accomplish that, and Hillarie’s ten years of experience when working at TEST Football Academy with NFL Combine Athletes and NFL Pro’s allows her the opportunity to teach our high school athletes to “Eat Like the Pro’s”. And they learned how to fuel their bodies for optimal performance. If you are interested in having Hillarie speak to your team (and provide handouts), please contact us at 908-428-7978. Hillarie also does one-on-one nutrition to create customized diets for athletes or for anyone who wishes to decrease bodyfat and get on a healthier track.

FAMILY FITNESS NIGHT WILL BE BACK THIS FALL SO STAY TUNED!: We are thrilled to offer Family Fitness Nights – on selected Friday nights STARTING AGAIN THIS FALL. We didn’t schedule one for September because it is such a hectic time for most families – with kids starting back at school and fall sports beginning as well. Stay tuned for our October Newsletter to find out when our Family Fitness Nights are starting back up. What is Family Fitness Night: On these special nights, we have the kids and parents training together with a “family friendly” exercise circuit using cutting-edge equipment – and then we finish off with some fun, family dodge-ball – LOTS OF LAUGHS!. And we even provide dessert (a scoop of vanilla ice cream to show that hard work deserves a sweet treat). And on the Friday’s we are not offering Family Fitness night, we will be able to bring other great fitness programs like sports nutrition, weight-loss programs and family nutrition lectures – or we can close (to the public) to host private parties or events. You can always check our Monthly Training Calendar at the bottom of our home page to see when we are hosting Family Fitness Night – or other fitness events. Registration is required for Family Fitness Night – we limit the number of participants to ensure there is enough room for everyone to have fun!

“HEALTHY” HOME-MADE BAKED GOODS ARE BACK ON SATURDAY MORNINGS: Yes, you heard that right . . . it’s a little incentive to get up early for something healthy! We were serving refreshing yogurt parfaits after our 6:00 and 7:30 a.m. bootcamps during the summer, but now that the fall is upon us, get ready for some delicious and healthy home-baked goods. All we do is take a box of all natural cake or muffin mix (from Wegman’s or Shop-Rite in the organic dept), and we replace the oil with applesauce, and we add 1.5 scoops of Designer Whey French Vanilla Protein Powder (along with a scoop of Mila seeds, which are tiny Omega-3 seeds) to enhance its nutritional value.  You can also take your favorite cake recipe that you make from scratch – and substitute the oil for applesauce, and just add the protein powder and Mila seeds.   Sometimes you need a splash of water to add to the mix (if it is too dry), but you just bake and serve!  Oh and don’t forget to ENJOY!

AVON WALK FOR BREAST CANCER: My niece, Karleigh DiFranco, is taking on this challenge in October (39 miles!). Karleigh is walking in honor of the people who lost their lives, survived, or are still fighting breast cancer. Breast cancer has been in our own family and as well as friends, so it is a really worth-while cause. You may already know someone who is walking and trying to reach their minimum of raising $1,800. But if you don’t and would like to donate to this awesome cause, here is a link so you can donate: www.avonwalk.org, click donate and type in Karleigh DiFranco’s name, or the link is right here: http://info.avonfoundation.org/site/TR/Walk/NewYork?px=6296957&pg=personal&fr_id=2175&fb_source=message

OPERATION !MPACT by Hillarie Scannelli . . . We are really looking forward to getting Operation !MPACT off the ground!

MORALE TENT: Hillsborough resident and friend, Rob Movshin is presently serving our military as a Major in the U.S. Army. I’ve been informed by one of our !MPACT clients (Adrienne Matrulli – who has also been in touch with Rob) that some of the soldiers there could use any DVD movies, board games, poker chips, dart boards, Xbox 360 controllers & games, WII controllers and games, and PS3 controllers and games for a large morale tent they are building. If you have anything you can donate, please drop it off to !MPACT Training and we will send them off to Afghanistan for our troops.  Also, if anyone is interested in donating to any amount towards the purchase of nutritional supplements for our local soldiers serving in Afghanastan, please drop us an email: [email protected]. Here are more details on Operation !MPACT:    Better Nutrition for Our Soldiers: We’ve kept in touch with Rob Movshin (Major/U.S. Army) via email from Afghanistan with the hope we could try to put together a healthier eating plan for him and some of his fellow soldiers (based on the foods that are available for our troops). These guys put in long hours – through HOT temperatures, and these conversations with Rob made me realize there are NOT enough healthy options for our soldiers. Welcome OPERATION !MPACT . . . In addition to our own contributions, we are accepting donations so we can purchase protein/nutritional drinks (in ready-to-drink cartons) that we can ship directly to Rob’s troop in Afghanistan. We need to get some FUEL out to these men and women serving our country, so please help us in our effort to succeed. There are 69 soldiers in Rob’s troop, and we’re looking to get some supplements to them ASAP. Can you help us? No donation is too small. If you would like to contribute, please call us 908-429-7978 or email us at: [email protected]
FREE Training for Children/Teens of Military Parents: With all the sacrifices a family makes when a parent is serving in the military/overseas, we wanted to find a way to say “thank you”. !MPACT Training would like to offer FREE weekly training to any child/teen who lives in the Hillsborough area and has a parent actively serving overseas. Contact us for more info: [email protected]
REAL BOOTCAMP PREP:  We are offering a 50% discount on our Total Development Bootcamps for anyone who enlists in any of our armed forces (Army, Navy, Airforce, Marines, Coast Guard). On that note . . . We would like to wish Tim Coyle well, as he recently enlisted in the U.S. Airforce and came to !MPACT Training as a way to prepare himself for military bootcamp. Tim left for REAL bootcamp in August. We are proud to be part of your journey, Tim! Thinking of you, pal!

BIRTHDAY PARTIES & OTHER PRIVATE PARTIES AT !MPACT TRAINING: Several people recently asked us if we would host birthday parties for teens or kids at !MPACT. Actually, we’ve hosted a handful of them already, and they were a huge success. These parties are a great way to get a fun workout, complete a challenging sports obstacle course, and play some dodge-ball. We can also customize the party to meet your child or teen’s sports specific wishes. These parties last an hour and a half, and are a ton of fun. We have state-of-the art equipment so in order to keep our facility nice and clean, we do not allow food and beverages to be brought in. Instead, during the last 15 minutes of the party, we serve a refreshing scoop of vanilla or chocolate ice cream and bottled water to show hard work deserves a sweet treat. You can book your party up to five weeks in advance, and we host more than just birthday parties. We actually had some inquiries from people interested in having a “girl’s night out” for a bridal party, which would include some training, yoga, massage, and diet & nutrition tips. Name the occasion, and we’ll customize it to make it special. Call us if you have any questions or wish to book your party: 908-428-7978.

We will cater their hour-long session to meet their troop objectives. Some of the groups who have come so far, did a nice combination of nutrition along with a fun exercise circuit to help get their bodies stronger. The nutritional portion is fun and interactive, and during the exercise circuit, we use our cutting-edge equipment so they will have the time of their lives. We offer this training at a HUGE discount to Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts (minimal fee per child/teen), so please inquire if you are interested in having us work with your kids. Headstrong
By: Dan Del Guercio, Certified Personal Trainer, ACSM-CPT

There are a lot of misconceptions about athletic training in the industry of physical fitness. There are some people who think strength training is the only way to train athletes. In most circles, it is believed that performing 5 sets, 5 repetitions (typical 5×5 split) of an exercise is the most effective way to get stronger and faster. Some would even be as brash to say that it is the only way to get stronger and faster. However, it is my opinion that this perspective is one-dimensional and obtuse.

Primarily, you have to look at what sport you are training for. Some sports require a lot more strength and power. Some sports require more agility, mobility, and core strength. For example, American football players need a lot more compound movements in their program that target their major muscle groups in both their upper and lower bodies (i.e., barbell squats, power cleans, bench press, etc.). Adversely, baseball players need more core strengthening movements that mimic the kind of movements that take place on the field (i.e., oblique twists and lunges). Not to say that heavy squatting and power cleans would not help all athletes, but there are certain areas that hold priority for different sports. The same applies to functional, core training. There is not a single competitive sport that exists that does not require a strong core (from golf to martial arts to football).

Furthermore, you need to know what other areas are essential to train for. Agility and mobility are two dimensions of training that are often overlooked. If you can deadlift 500 lbs., squat 400 lbs., and bench press 350 lbs, but you have horrible footwork and mobility your athletic performance will suffer. Targeting strength solely without making yourself quicker, more agile, and lighter on your feet will not make you a better athlete.

Incorporating all styles and techniques into your training regimen is the best way to make sure you are a well-rounded, diverse athlete, and also a great way to prevent injury. Introducing strength training, speed and agility, and an endurance (aerobic and anaerobic) element to your program will assure you the greatest level of success.
Circuit training is the best way to include all of these elements of training together without disregarding one. A circuit is a group of exercises that are performed in rapid succession. You can have as many exercises as you need. If there is one area of training you are lacking in you can vary the circuit accordingly.

You can perform barbell squats, speed ladder drills, wall sprints, bench press, pull-ups, and oblique twists in a matter of minutes. All of the major muscle groups are hit (strength element), there are sports-specific drills included to focus on form (speed and agility element), and the pace of the circuit provides you with the endurance element you need to perform at a higher level on the field. It is a very rigorous and grueling style of training, but the hard work will pay off on the playing field or court.

Bodybuilders and powerlifters can also benefit from circuit training. Most lifters tend to stick to certain set and repetition ranges, and avoid circuit training. However, implementing circuit training along with the traditional lifts will help improve endurance when you perform blocks of exercises. It will also help strengthen the core and connective tissues, lessening susceptibility to injury.

Circuit training is not the only way to train, but it does give you a very diverse workout that will change every session – and our respond well to change. If you are looking for a way to incorporate all styles of athletic training into a session it is by far the most efficient.

!MPACT Menu: Trying to find a local restaurant where you can get a healthier bite to eat? Hillarie Scannelli, owner/!MPACT, asked client, Antonio Ruffa (owner/Caffe Piazza) to come up some new items on his menu that would present healthier choices for busy people who are on-the-go. Antonio (also an !MPACT client) at Caffe Piazza uses protein-enriched pasta & lean meatballs and offers a “baked chicken parm” instead of the traditional fried version. The portions are calorie controlled and just right. These menu items are perfectly balanced with proteins and carbs, and if you want something a little lower in carbs, their Cajun shrimp or chicken over mixed greens is perfect! Stop in to visit Caffe Piazza today – 649 Route 206 in Hillsborough (in the same strip mall with Stop-N-Shop). SPORTS PHYSICAL THERAPY: This is a great place to go for any type of physical rehab – and boy, are did a great job on my lower-back pain! They handle everything from ligament sprains to arthritic pain. I have always had a strong core and lower back, but I guess my age (47), my strenuous training routine/6 days per week, and the long hours I spend on my feet every day as a trainer can often take a toll on my lower back. Every now and again, it just tightens up and I am in a lot of pain. I heavily rely on the physical therapists at Sports Physical Therapy to get me mobile and pain free again! FRANKLIN MEDICAL GROUP: Dr. Steven DelMaestro (MD, Internal Medicine) of Hillsborough, NJ was approached to head up Franklin Medical Group – a new medical practice affiliated with Somerset Medical Hospital. Before taking on this new venture, Dr. DelMaestro had his own practice for 22 years, operating out of his offices in New Brunswick and North Brunswick (NJ).
