NEED TO REDUCE INFLAMMATION?

Whether it is joint inflammation or digestive inflammation, what we eat plays a BIG role in how we feel.  You would be shocked at how good you can feel when you eat the right foods that keep inflammation at bay. So let’s address the fact that inflammation is sometimes a good thing, like when healing an injury – since it is temporary.  The body sends water to the wound or injury to help it heal.  But in many cases, foods we eat cause excess inflammation and it becomes a problem.  When inflammation becomes chronic, the immune system begins to attack healthy/normal cells.  So instead of healing, it becomes damaging.  So many illnesses have been linked to excess inflammation including heart disease, cancer, arthritis, Alzheimer’s, and even acne.  So limiting or omitting the foods that trigger inflammation is a great start.  Listed below are the foods known to cause inflammation in the body — and below that are the foods to help REDUCE inflammation:

1) SUGAR!  The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition warns that sugar triggers the release of inflammatory messengers. And sugar is sugar! . . . Whether it is a natural source found in fruit juices –or it is a processed o refined sugar.  Even agave nectar (which was supposed to be a healthier form of sugar) is still very high in sugar with fructose content of 90%.  Remember we want to avoid fructose and sucrose too if we want to reduce inflammation.  Lastly, and I hate to say this one . . . Alcohol is a big contributing factor for inflammation.

2) Peanuts and Peanut Products:  This was surprising to me – especially since I always thought Natural Peanut Butter was a great source of natural fat with a hint of protein.  Well it’s still perfectly o.k. to have it, but since I suffer from joint pain, I am going to really limit it or completely omit it from my diet and will replace with Natural Almond Butter which has much less of an effect on inflammation.  Peanuts are also prone to mold and fungus – therefore, our bodies are in defense mode when we consume it.

3) Gluten & Refined Carbohydrates – but most of us probably knew this one already.  Gluten can be found in so many foods including bread, pasta, cookies, crackers, some cereals, etc.  Gluten is directly responsible for joint and digestive inflammation – darn – love bread haha!  But again, since I suffer from joint pain, I omit it.

4) Dairy – Many of you may also have heard that dairy can cause joint and digestive inflammation.  I don’t really do dairy anymore either – except an occasional ice cream on vacation.  Milk products are “casein proteins”, which has a lot of sugar available after digestion and can trigger insulin and hormone boosts which trigger inflammatory reactions. Dairy is also known to bring toxins and unhealthy bacteria into the body so I still indulge in a little cheese every now and again, but no yogurt or milk.  If you are worried about keeping your bones strong, you can find twice the amount of calcium in almond milk than in regular cow’s milk . . . and adding green leafy vegetables are a great way to supplement as well.

5) Saturated Fats – None of us intentionally eat these, but they are found in some of our favorite foods like PIZZA!  It is also found in high doses in red meat . . . I love a good steak!  Saturated Fats trigger inflammation of fat tissue – and who needs that!  It’s no wonder we feel so bloated and swollen after eating pizza!

6) Trans Fats – These are in our favorite pastries, cookies, processed snack foods and margarine.  Honestly, it is so important to read labels on processed or frozen foods and eliminate the ones that use partially-hydrogenated fats . . . INFLAMMATION! Not to mention super bad for your heart.

7) Unhealthy Oils:  These are dangerous when used in excess. Our bodies need healthy fats – but the following oils used in excess (daily) can contribute to inflammation:  corn oil, safflower oil, sunflower oil, grapeseed oil, peanut oil, vegetable oil, and soy.

8) MSG (mono-sodium glutamate) – The worst part about MSG is that it is hidden in so many foods (frozen foods as well as prepared foods, salad dressings, flavoring packets, gravies, deli meats, prepared soups, and fast food).  MSG can trigger two separate pathways of chronic inflammation according to the Arthritis Foundation.

OK So let’s list some foods that can REDUCE INFLAMMATION:

1) Fish:  Fish has plenty of healthy Omega 3 Fatty Acids – so having fish at least twice per week would be great (wild-caught only):  Salmon, Tuna, Mackerel, and Herring are good choices.

2) Healthy Oils & Fats:  Extra Virgin Olive Oil, Walnut Oil, and Avocados.

3) Certain Fruits:  Cherries, Blackberries, Strawberries, Blueberries & Raspberries.

4) Green Leafy Vegetables – and Broccoli! Broccoli not only has bone-building benefits but has been shown to slow the progression of some forms of arthritis.

5) Green Tea:  According to research by the Arthritis foundation, green tea blocks the production of molecules that cause joint damage.  So YAY for Green tea . . . It also helps to improve and speed up the metabolism.

6) Citrus fruits — like oranges and limes and small portions of grapefruit since they are high in sugar.  All of these are rich in Vitamin C.

7) Gluten-Free Grains and Carbs like brown rice, oatmeal, quinoa and sweet potatoes.

8) Turmeric (spice or in capsule form) – is known for centuries for its anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant qualities.

So as you can see, there are foods to avoid or limit – and there are foods that help to actually reduce inflammation.  Remember, everything we eat gets digested and then “does something”.  So let’s take our macronutrients . . . Proteins help to build muscle, carbohydrates provide our body with energy, fats help our bodies to grow and repair, in addition to enhancing brain functioning and providing the body with an additional energy source.  So if you want to try to reduce inflammation, it might mean making small changes to your diet . . . Use extra virgin olive oil or walnut oil with vinegar on your salads instead of store-bought dressings that have too many “unknowns” that contribute to inflammation.  Ditch the dairy and red meat . . . switch to using almond milk where you use to use milk – and switch to eating more fish, chicken, turkey and eggs when searching for a healthy protein source – rather than red meat.  Concentrate on eating lots of green leafy vegetables and salads instead of breads and pastas.  You would do your very best to eliminate sugars (even limiting or omitting alcohol which is a great contributor to inflammation).  But I bet with even making small changes as outlined, you would feel the difference.  Eating healthy is not always revolving around “looking good” . . . but more about “feeling good”.  Let’s give it a shot!

!MPACT’s PERFECT SUMMERTIME & FALL RECIPE SUGGESTION:

Grilled Herbed Chicken & Potato Foil Packs

Grilled herbed chicken & potato foil packs are a fun and simple for summer or even as a quick meal in the fall when many parents are busy running their kids around to sports practices.  This recipe serves: 4

Ingredients

  • 6-8 boneless skinless chicken thighs OR 4 boneless skinless chicken breasts

  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder

  • 1 teaspoon onion powder

  • ½ teaspoon dried oregano

  • ½ teaspoon dried basil

  • ¼ teaspoon dried dill

  • ½ teaspoon salt

  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper

  • 3 tablespoons oil

  • 1-1½ pound potatoes (red or gold potatoes work best in this recipe), thinly sliced (about 2 cups potato slices)

  • 1 cup sliced mushrooms

Instructions

  1. Stir together seasonings and set aside. Add oil to a bowl along with chicken, potatoes, and mushrooms and toss to coat everything in the oil.

  2. Lay out 4 12×12 sheets of nonstick foil on a flat surface. Divide chicken, potatoes, and mushrooms between each of the foil sheets. (If using thighs there should be 1-2 per foil sheet, if using breasts there should be 1 per foil sheet) Sprinkle with seasoning mixture.

  3. Fold foil over the chicken-potato-mushroom mixture and scrunch the ends of the foil together to close off the foil pack.

  4. Place foil packs on preheated grill and cook for about 10-15 minutes, then flip and cook another 5-7 minutes. Check the chicken for doneness, once cooked through, garnish with fresh herbs if desired (such as thyme, rosemary, or oregano) and serve immediately.

 CLIENT HIGHLIGHTS:

Meet Carter Altman (pictured above) . . . A 2017 graduate from Hillsborough High School who is headed to NYU for his first fall semester — and will be playing soccer there as well!  Carter is one of our personal training clients, and when I asked him if I could interview him for our newsletter, he didn’t hesitate.  Carter’s reason for training with us was to make sure he was in the right mental and physical condition so that he could get the most out of his college experience. He loves lifting weights and wanted to focus on form – and also wanted to get stronger.  I was delighted to hear that he actually pays attention to what he eats, since he realizes nutrition has a lot to do with performance.  And I loved learning about Carter’s background . . . He started playing soccer at age 4 and was living in England with his family who transferred there due to his dad’s job.  He didn’t move back to the US until he was 9, and he found soccer to be much different here – maybe even slightly less competitive than in England.  He started playing for competitive travel teams during his younger years leading into middle school – and then onto high school.  Carter is excited to play a Division 3 sport – so he would be able to get the best of both worlds . . . world class academics with sports/soccer to provide athletics, balance and fun.  Carter we wish you the very best at NYU, and it was a privilege for us to train you in preparation for college soccer.

Next, we would like you to meet Samantha Marsh (pictured above #7) . . . A beautiful girl who is also a 2017 Hillsborough High School graduate.  Sam is off to Ithaca College for her fall semester, and will be playing lacrosse for Ithaca.  When I asked Sam why she started training with us she said she was looking for a higher level of confidence as she heads off to play lacrosse in college.  She wanted better form when lifting weights, as she feels that is more important than “how much” she is lifting (smart gal!).  Not only did she gain confidence when training with us, but she also feels completely comfortable and confident now when working out on her own.  She is motivated to increase her bench press and her squats, and is looking forward to her college workouts.  Sam wanted to play field hockey when she was younger, but there were no local teams she could join at her age group.  Instead Sam chose lacrosse, since she was able to start that in 5th grade.  She fell in love with the sport so things certainly happen for a reason.  Prior to lacrosse she did cross country and cheer.  She loves the camaraderie among team mates so she is super excited to meet her lacrosse team at Ithaca.  Lots of luck to you, Samantha Marsh!  We are so proud of you!

Please CLICK HERE to check out our SEPTEMBER Group Training Calendar – and in addition to our group sessions, we also offer one-on-one training private training, partner training (2 people) and semi-private training (a handful of their friends or team-mates).  We can help them address their weaknesses so they are ready for their next season.  Call us at 908-428-7978 or email: [email protected]

VIRTUAL NUTRITIONAL COACHING:  This is the latest way people are setting and reaching their fitness goals – especially if they don’t live close to !MPACT Training.  The first 1-hour session (+ five 30-minute sessions to follow each week) via phone with Hillarie is a great way for the client to outline his/her fitness goals and set up their plan of attack . . . whether it be weight-loss; improved energy levels; building muscle while decreasing bodyfat to get leaner and stronger; or receiving workout programs (via email) to do on your own so you get the results you are looking for.  Maybe you just need that motivation, knowing you are being held accountable to an expert in this field – as that helps so many of us stay on track.  Your program can also be a combination of nutritional & dietary guidance ALONG WITH exercise counseling for what might be best for you to do on your own — and you will actually have small homework assignments depending on your goals.  As part of the initial session, Hillarie will email you some nutritional info and general fitness handouts that you will go over on your initial call so you have a good idea of what is expected of you in the weeks ahead.  Once enrolled, you will be emailed a blank food log & exercise log which you will complete and email back to Hillarie on a weekly basis (prior to your scheduled weekly call).  After the initial 1-hour session, the next 5 weeks will be 30-minute sessions (via phone) to go over your food log — to talk about any obstacles or barriers you may have incurred — to talk about your exercise log and receive helpful corrections as needed — and to get inspired for the week ahead.  It’s really hard to do it alone, especially when your life is busy with so many other things.  So working with Hillarie for 6 weeks is a great way to change your mindset, and become more focused on your fitness, your health, and your overall wellness, and to gain the knowledge about proper nutrition and exercise based on your goals.   *If you wish to continue these coaching sessions, they can be purchased in 5 week packs.  For pricing, please email:  [email protected]

!MPACT Training:  So, do you know why our facility is different than any other gyms or training facilities?  We offer all different types of workouts for every fitness level, and our clients are ALWAYS guided by a certified/degreed Personal Trainer.  We can talk to you about your goals, specifically, to help guide you through your journey, AND we are offer some great nutritional advice to help you reach your goals.  Please click here to take a look at our SEPTEMBER GROUP TRAINING CALENDAR for adults, teens and kids.  We have such a wide variety of group training sessions ranging from strength & resistance training to multi-level bootcamps or cardio-style workouts . . . We have just what you need!  We also offer one-on-one personal training, partner training or semi-private training and those are scheduled separately based on the time that is best for you to train, matched up with our trainer availability.  So please call us to let us know your availability and we will get you onto our trainer’s calendar (908) 428-7978!

WE’RE INTERVIEWING/HIRING!  We are getting close – we are narrowing down our search from applicants, but there is still time if you know of someone who would be a perfect trainer at our facility.  Our trainers’ calendars are getting booked up at the more popular time slots in the afternoons (after school) along with evenings and Saturdays, so we are hoping to find another amazing trainer to join our TEAM.  This candidate must be a “degreed or certified trainer” with CURRENT certifications, and experience working with athletes is preferred –as we train many teen athletes as well as adults.  If you know of any qualified candidates, please have them call Michael at 908-403-7605.  We prefer trainers who come from a referral.

CUTTING-EDGE TRAINING:  Did you know our trainers have started incorporating REDCORD/ACTIVCORE training for our one-on-one training clients?  By using this equipment, we can help our clients learn to function in healthier movement patterns, recognizing that our muscles are large connected bands. Sometimes if we experience pain, it is due to the fact that our automatic pilot is not firing or using the correct muscles to perform a certain movement. I recently went for my first ActiveCore certification in December, and I am really excited to help our trainers and our clients set and reach new goals in 2017.  Some people have lower back pain, while others have poor core strength or poor range of motion – some people are inflexible.  When working with Redcord equipment you will use your body’s DEEP core muscles, and you will re-train your body so it no longer moves in dysfunctional patterns.  AMAZING!

NOTE FROM HILLARIE – Month of September: Although fall is my favorite season and that’s what is coming next, it brings a tear to my eye to see summer coming to an end.  I really am having a great summer – I had some nice family time in LBI and Wildwood – LOVE the Jersey shore.  And I also enjoyed not having to rush the boys out the door to get the bus for school or dealing with homework complaints.  All of those feelings aside, I want to head into September with a clear game plan for making my health, my nutrition and my fitness a priority.  As a business owner, Michael and I often come last when it comes to having time for ourselves . . . whether it was a workout we skipped due to business issues or getting the kids where they needed to go. I’m sure you all have busy schedules so you can completely relate.  So I am pretty excited to map out my plans for the fall.  This might be a good idea for you to do the same.  Plan your meals for the week – as well as your workouts.  Put them on your calendar just like you would a doctor’s appointment.  You gotta have a plan.  If you have tried to come up with a plan thus far and you don’t feel like you have been very successful, please don’t give up.  We need to re-focus on cleaner eating, more exercise, more time dedicated for sleep, time for prayer, and time for getting organized.  You can totally do this.  Remember, the only way to fail is to quit.  We will have no quitters here.  You CAN do this!   If you ever feel like you need a quick conversation or phone call to help you set some goals, just give me a call 908-428-7978 –Hillarie

RWJ SPORTS PHYSICAL THERAPY:  This is a great place to go for any type of physical rehab – and boy, are did a great job on my lower-back pain!  They handle everything from ligament sprains to arthritic pain.  I have always had a strong core and lower back, but I guess my age (47), my strenuous training routine/6 days per week, and the long hours I spend on my feet every day as a trainer can often take a toll on my lower back.  Every now and again, it just tightens up and I am in a lot of pain.  I heavily rely on the physical therapists at Sports Physical Therapy to get me mobile and pain free again!  They have multiple locations, and one of the partners, Jeff Erickson, is a neighbor of mine – great guy!  Can’t say enough about what an awesome facility this is!  Hillsborough location:  908-359-8800, Princeton (609) 419-0455, Somerset (732) 565-5455, Flemington (908) 806-2000.
