A Special Thank You to the Scanellis for “Making an Impact”
We dedicate this newsletter to Hillarie and Mike Scannelli, as they embark on their new adventure in South Carolina this summer, after 12 years as the owners of !mpact Training. We sat down with Hillarie, !MPACT’s founder to get some insight on her experiences and some parting words.
What was your favorite thing about owning !MPACT Training?
One of the best parts was the “impact” we could make on the community. I knew I could use !mpact as a platform to do good for others, whether it was a local client or family in need or through the charity Steps Together. This business was truly a blessing for us and so many community members.
Do you have a favorite memory to share?
“One of my favorite things about running !mpact was the laughs we had with morning bootcampers. Over the years we made up all these ridiculous jokes and have funny memories about each and every person. We decided to take that “show on the road” and had an !mpact Pub Crawl through Somerville one night (pre-COVID). We all tried to Uber home but there were no Ubers available. So, one of our bootcampers, Niles, was on medication and couldn’t drink so he make 6 trips back and forth to Uber everyone home safely. It was the funniest night ever, and we nicknamed him Niles “Uber” Johnson.”
What are you going to miss most about !MPACT?
“Michael and I will be getting jobs down in South Carolina and I still will continue my virtual fitness business with personal training and coaching people through weight loss virtually. Honestly, I think what I will miss most are the clients … so many have become our friends, like family. It’s hard to think about not seeing them weekly. I’m depending on keeping in touch and having visitors to our new home in Summerville, South Carolina!”
What is the best advice you can give to the !MPACT Family?
“The best advice I can give to our team of trainers is to never lose sight of staying focused on serving others. When we could we sponsored local sports teams or donated to charity events … it’s who we are and the way it worked, our community loved us back and always came to us for our expertise in training and fitness. I feel so good about leaving this business to the team of trainers we have here and most of all, Sean Fagan. He’s a good guy, comes from a good family, is passionate about training, and he has the desire to continue our legacy and even take !mpact to the next level. What more could we ask for?”
Thanks Hillarie and Mike for all you have done for your clients and the community, and we wish you only the best in your new adventure. We know you will make as much of an “impact” there as you have done here.
!MPACT Recipe Share – Black Bean Burgers
Summer is the perfect time for barbeques and cookouts. Looking for a healthier, high protein option to keep you within your nutrition goals? How about trying this recipe for a veggie burger using black beans? Black beans are high in protein and fiber and contain important nutrients as part of a healthy diet. Give them a try!
Ingredients:
2 (14 ounce) cans black beans, drained, rinsed, and patted dry
1 Tablespoon extra virgin olive oil
3/4 cup finely chopped bell pepper (1/2 of a pepper)
1 cup finely chopped yellow onion (1/2 of a large onion)
3 garlic cloves, minced (about 1 Tablespoon)
1 and 1/2 teaspoons ground cumin
1 teaspoon chili powder
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1/4 teaspoon smoked paprika
1/2 cup bread crumbs or oat flour
1/2 cup feta cheese (skip if vegan)
2 large eggs (see note for vegan substitution)
1 Tablespoon Worcestershire sauce (see note for vegan & vegetarian version)
2 Tablespoons ketchup, mayo, or BBQ sauce
pinch salt + pepper
Instructions:
- Preheat oven to 325°F (163°C). Spread beans evenly onto a lined baking sheet and bake for 15 minutes until slightly dried out.
- Meanwhile, sauté olive oil, chopped pepper, onion, and garlic over medium heat until peppers and onions are soft, about 5-6 minutes. Gently blot some of the moisture out. Place in a large bowl or in a food processor with the remaining ingredients (cumin, chili powder, garlic powder, smoked paprika, bread crumbs, cheese, eggs, worcestershire, ketchup, salt, and pepper). Stir or pulse everything together, then add the black beans. Mash with a fork or pulse the mixture, leaving some larger chunks of beans.
- Form into patties– about 1/3 cup of mixture in each.
- To bake: Place patties on a parchment paper lined baking sheet and bake at 375°F (191°C) for 10 minutes on each side, 20 minutes total. To grill: Place patties on greased aluminum foil and grill 8 minutes on each side. Heat temperature is personal preference as all grills differ. Generally, black bean burgers should grill on medium-high heat about 350°F (177°C) – 400°F (204°C).
- Serve with your favorite toppings. Store leftovers in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.
To make the recipe vegan or vegetarian: Worcestershire sauce is not vegan or vegetarian. For vegetarian burgers, leave it out or replace with your favorite vegetarian condiment such as BBQ sauce. For vegan burgers, make the following 3 changes: (1) leave out the Worcestershire sauce or replace with your favorite vegan condiment such as BBQ sauce, (2) leave out the cheese, and (3) replace the eggs with 1/3 cup mashed sweet potato.

Tips for Staying “On Track” this Summer
Summer is something we can all look forward to because of the longer days, warmer weather and lots of fun outdoor opportunities. After a very tough 2020, we can definitely look forward to gatherings of families and friends, trips to the beach and vacations. Summer brings with it some “healthy eating traps” such as delicious boardwalk, fair and festival foods, the ice cream truck you hear every night, and barbeques and family reunions with all our favorite dishes. Below are some tips to help you navigate your way through the summer in a healthy way, but enjoy it at the same time.
- Have a plan before you go on vacation or to parties. Allow yourself to enjoy but in moderation.
- Don’t arrive to a party or event hungry. You are more prone to make unhealthy choices that way. Have a small snack before you leave so you can make good choices.
- Don’t drink your calories but DO drink a lot of water.
- Don’t punish yourself for one bad day, just get back on track the next day.
- Stay away from “fad” diets … all carbs and fats are not created equally. Don’t totally avoid them.
- Take advantage of the fresh fruits and produce of the summer. Visit a farmers market and load up on healthy options that will keep you full!
If you want to be able to track your progress, be sure to schedule an appointment to try an InBody Measurement (FREE for all !MPACT members).
